MegaWiki: All The Words You Need to Know to Understand Fake Grass Jargon

Words you need to know to guide you in your search for the perf turf!

If you’re looking at this glossary, that means you’re probably new to this site, and to synthetic grass--so welcome! We at MegaGrass always try to make our visitors and prospect clients feel comfortable. We’re guessing you’re feeling a bit lost with all the overwhelming terminologies found on this website but don’t you worry; this blog post will lift some of that mystery by uncovering the meaning of technical terms you might need to understand to make rational decisions (like buying our products!)

Synthetic grass terms to be familiar with:

Backing Weight

Backing Weight

Backing weight is the total weight of the turf’s primary backing and the secondary coating for every square yard of turf. The backing is the part of the artificial turf that holds everything together, so it’s mandatory that this component can take the pressure. The higher the backing weight, the more durable it is. You may consider products with lower backing weight for purely decorative purposes. Learn more about Backing Weight here

Blade Design

Blade Design

Refers to the shape and style of every single piece of grass blade. Although a minute detail, this greatly affects the performance of the turf. Learn more about our blade designs here.

Blade / Pile Height

Blade/Pile Height

The blade or pile height is the length of the longest blade that can be found in your turf. A sufficient pile height can make the turf look like a perfectly grown bed of grass. Learn about our Blade/Pile Height options here.

Face Weight

Face Weight

Refers to the number of ounces of yarns used per square yard of the turf. Simply put, the higher the face weight, the denser and longer the artificial grass is. This also makes the turf feel softer and is considered a key indicator of overall turf quality. Learn about our Face Weight choices here.

Infill

Infill

Most people don’t know that synthetic turf doesn’t actually stand up on its own. It’s the infill that keeps the blades standing upright and serves as protection for the backing. It’s also the infill that helps the grass retain its bouncy feel over the years. Learn more about our Infill range here.

Lush Life

Lush Life

Refers to the overall condition of the turf.

Permeability

Permeability

The quality of the artificial turf that causes it to allow liquids to easily pass through it. This is an important factor to consider when buying artificial grass for applications that require regular washing.

Roll Width

Roll Width

Refers to the cut of turf. MegaGrass offers artificial grass in custom sizes to help minimize material waste from overbuying.

Thatch

Thatch

This is the shorter material created to imitate the dead blades of grass. They are usually created using various colors to achieve a realistic dried out look.

Traffic Level

Traffic Level

The amount of foot traffic that the turf can regularly and collectively withstand over the years.
