You no doubt purchased your artificial grass in order to avoid your typical outdoor maintenance. After all, no one enjoys spending their Sunday in the sweltering hot sun pushing a mower up and down their backyard. You also don’t want to be wasting money on sprinkler systems or spraying water daily to keep it looking as green as possible.
However, despite these advantages of owning artificial turf, you still need to perform a few chores to ensure your grass looks its best year-round. From killing weeds that sneak through to cleaning up stains, there are several methods that help preserve your lawn for years to come.
So, where do you start? There’s no need to look for the instruction book that came with your artificial turf. Here’s everything you need to know about protecting your synthetic lawn.
While you don’t have to perform as much maintenance on your artificial turf as you would a traditional grass lawn, you still have chores you need to complete to ensure it looks presentable and lasts as long as possible.
Ignoring stains or leaving debris will cause your artificial lawn to degrade faster than usual. Even though turf doesn’t catch diseases and isn’t susceptible to fungi, it still suffers from wear and tear. Remember, your artificial lawn lives outside 24 hours a day, seven days a week,365 days a year.
The combination of the changing weather throughout the seasons means that the turf is highly exposed. You can’t control the temperature throughout the seasons, but you can still do your part to make sure your lawn has the longest life possible.
There are many factors that can impact the lifespan of artificial turf. It can depend on how often it’s getting used. For example, do you have kids playing on the lawn or pets who love rolling around on it? The weather in your area also plays a factor, especially if it’s pretty warm.
Depending on these variables, your artificial lawn can last anywhere between 15 and 20 years. It’s also possible for it to survive even longer if you take good care of your turf. If you can limit the exposure to heat, keep the surface area clean, and protect it from general wear and tear, then you can preserve it for as long as 30 years.
Not only should you take these necessary steps to get a good return on your investment, but you should be performing regular maintenance on your turf so it looks presentable year-round. Thankfully, many of these tasks won’t require you to break a sweat. If you complete them regularly, it should take no time at all.
This rule should apply regardless of the material your grass is made of, but it’s imperative for the preservation of the turf that you get rid of any pet waste that falls onto it. You’re best to wait for solids to dry first before you remove them. This will ensure that you’re able to collect all of it, and nothing is left behind.
For liquid waste, you should douse your turf with cold water. If you notice any unpleasant smells, then you can use some mild soap or detergent to get rid of them. This should also help remove any stains as well.
Regardless if you have pets, kids, or visitors over, accidents are going to happen. All it takes is for someone to spill some coffee, soda, or wine for your artificial turf to soak it up. You might want to try and remain calm and in control when a situation like this occurs, but you should move quickly.
The longer a liquid remains on your turf, the quicker it will absorb. Blot the stain with a paper towel or any other dry cloth that can soak it up. Once you’ve got as much as you can, rinse the area with water and dishwashing detergent. Finally, cleanse the space with clean, cold water and let it dry naturally. You may need to repeat for more stubborn stains such as oil or crayons.
You might not know it to look at the turf, but your artificial lawn contains a sand infill to help it remain in place and make it appear like regular grass. The more you walk on it, kids play on it, and pets roll around on it, means that it can become flat over a period of time.
One of the best ways to prevent this type of appearance is by brushing over it at least once a month. You can use the same broom you sweep floors with. Simply brush over the blades in various directions, and your turf will look as good as new. Just avoid performing this task in the first 12 weeks of laying down the lawn. The sand needs time to settle before you start shuffling it around.
Thankfully, you don’t need to hose down artificial turf as regularly as you do grass lawns. Your synthetic turf will look its greenest every day of the year. However, it’s still important to give it a rinse regularly in order to protect and preserve it.
Spraying down artificial turf will eliminate any pollen or dust that has attached itself to the blades. It also helps remove any spills or stains you may not have known about. If you live in an area where you get rain regularly, then you can skip this step. Mother Nature will take care of this one for you.
No one enjoys weeding lawns or garden beds. However, it’s necessary for the survival of your plants as well as the preservation of your artificial turf. Weeds can cause significant issues with your drainage resulting in little puddles around your backyard. It can even lead to more of them sprouting up.
Sadly, you’re not going to be able to pull these up like you would in normal circumstances. You would need to uproot the entire lawn, and that’s not an option. You’ll want to use some weed killer, and in particular, one that is a water-based herbicide. This will ensure you don’t cause any damage to the blades or accidentally change the color of the turf resulting in a patchy lawn.
You might have seen on the packaging that you should keep your turf away from any heating elements. This includes grills, fire pits, torches, and any outdoor heaters. Artificial lawns absorb more heat than regular grass and can get damaged very quickly when exposed to heat or flames.
If your synthetic lawn accidentally catches alight, you can patch the area that has been burned. However, the best solution is prevention. Try to keep any fire as far away from your turf as possible.
The frequency of maintenance to protect and preserve your lawn will depend on how often you use it. If you have children or pets that play outside a lot, then you’ll want to perform some tasks weekly, such as brushing the turf, hosing it down, and removing any debris that’s landed on it.
However, if you don’t spend a lot of time on your artificial turf, you can stick to a monthly maintenance schedule. In this case, you’re going to want always to ensure you brush your lawn. Next, rinse it down to ensure you get rid of any dust or pollen. Finally, look for any stains or spills that might have happened when you weren’t around. The sooner you get into a good routine of performing maintenance on your artificial turf, the longer you’ll preserve it and the better it will look.
Even though many people replace their grass with artificial turf, it doesn’t mean they can set it and forget it. You still need to perform regular maintenance on it to protect and preserve the material. While you won’t need to mow the lawn, you’ll need to brush it down, rinse it with water, and kill any weeds that suddenly appear. You also need to ensure you clean up any stains or spills as well as keep them away from any heating elements.

Tools Needed:
- Hammer and Nails or
- Staple Gun and Staples
1. First, we always recommend planning out the the tools and space needed. This should always be the first step in any DIY or home improvement project. Take a look at your space and measure exactly what you need to make project come to life. Once you have your exact measurements, order your new faux privacy hedge panels or speak to one of our team members to see how many panels would work best for your project. If you are planning to do something more creative than square or rectangle panels, it will help if you lightly draw your design or vision on your wall with a pencil. This can help in obtaining the right measurements, but also in placing your hedge panels in the right positions.
2. When your new ivy hedges arrive, you can begin customizing them to the exact shape and measurements you need. If you need to, you can easily cut each panel down to the exact size you need. Simply use a sharp pair of scissors to snip the panels and then reassemble them using cable or zip ties. You can create a seemingly infinite number of different combinations with this tactic. A common concern is that the zip ties will show through the ivy. Don't worry, our ivy is the highest quality, meaning it is full and lush enough so that no one can see behind the surface!
3. Now that you have all of the panels cut down to size, it is time to attach them together and get ready to mount them to your wooden wall. To connect the panels, simply snap them in place. Our simple yet secure connecting system allows you to easily snap your panels together via the snaps located on the sides of each panel. If you had to cut your panels down to size, you can easily reattach them using zip ties. MegaGrass fake ivy walls are packed with full foliage to hide any zip ties, fasteners, or adhesives.
4. Now that you have your panels ready, you can begin to mount them to your wooden wall. This is the part that many people think is complicated, but in reality, it is as simple as sticking some leaves to a wall. Place your faux hedge panels on your wall and use the nails or staples to stick them in place. Whether you use nails or staples can depend on a number of factors, such as the type of wood, thickness of the wall, or what you have behind the wall. If your wall is outside and you have decorations or art on the other side, nails may not be the best idea.
5. Once you have your new MegaGrass artificial hedge panels in place, it is time for you to sit back and marvel at your amazing work. This is truly the best part of any DIY project. Invite your friends and family over and let them think you ran out and installed a new natural hedge wall in one day!.
Tools Needed:
- Timber Beams
- Drill and Screws
- Washers
1. If you have a metal fence, you will need to do a little extra work, but it is still relatively simple. To securely attach your privacy hedge to a metal fence, you will need to install timber beams approximately every 40cm or so. Begin by planning out exactly what you want to do. Most metal fences have ripples in them, so you want to make sure your ivy panels are not flush against the fence. This will cause your ivy wall to become wavy and lose much of its realism. Also keep in mind the timber beams that you will be installing as well.
2. Attach your timber or wooden beams to your metal fence. This can be done by screwing or attaching them at the top and bottom of each beam. Remember, you want your timber beams to be placed about 40cm apart to ensure your ivy panels fit properly. You can use screws to affix the beams vertically to your metal fence at the top and bottom. Then, place timber beams horizontally in between the vertical beams and attach them to your metal fence.
3. Once you have your timber beams attached to your metal fence, it is time to get your artificial hedge wall ready to be installed. Separate the panels or cut them using a pair of sharp scissors. Our faux boxwood hedge panels can be easily reaffixed using simple cable or zip ties. Our secure connecting system allows you to snap full panels together securely and easily in just seconds.
4. It is now time to attach your faux hedges to your metal fence. To do this, you are going to want to use your screws and washers to attach the ivy panels to the timber beams. It is recommended that you use 12 screws and washers per meter of faux hedge wall. It can be possible to attach your hedge wall directly onto your metal fence using your screws and washers, but this depends on what you have on the other side. With metal fencing being so much thinner than other materials, you will likely have sharp screws sticking out through the other side.
5. Time for the fun part. Invite all of your family and friends over to marvel at your handy work or simply enjoy the realism of MegaGrass artificial hedge walls. Marvel at the beauty of the thick leaves year round!
Tools Needed:
- Zip Ties or Cable Ties
- Scissors
1. Attaching MegaGrass artificial privacy hedges to wire or mesh fencing may seem like a tough task, but this is actually one of the easiest surfaces to install ivy on. As with any home improvement project, you first want to start out by measuring exactly how much privacy hedge you are going to need. With a wire or mesh fence, there is no need for anything extra to attach your hedge panels to, so you simply measure and order what you need. Feel free to contact our team with any questions or concerns.
2. Time to prep your new faux hedge panels. In some cases, you may need to trim or reshape your hedge panels to the right shape or size for your fence. To do this, you will simply need to use a pair of sharp scissors to snip and cut the artificial hedge panels into the exact measurements you need. To reshape them, you can use your cable or zip ties to reattach them together. This works well for odd-shaped sized fencing that you want to completely cover.
3. To get your panels ready for mounting, you will need to reattach them together. Our artificial privacy hedge panels come with an exclusive interlocking system that is easy as a snap - literally. You simply use the snaps located on each panel to reassemble your panels into the sizes and shapes needed. For the hedge wall panels you have had to cut to size, you can simply use your zip or cable ties to stick them back together.
4. Now that we have all of our MegaGrass hedge wall panels cut down to the exact sizing we need, it is time to start attaching them to your wire or mesh fencing. To do this, use your zip ties to attach the panels to your fence at the top, bottom, and through the middle of your panels. This will ensure a tight fit and a more realistic look as your hedge wall won't start popping away from your fence. Once you have all cable ties attached, go to the backside of your fence and pull all of your ties as tightly as possible. Use your scissors to snip the excess hanging through the back of your fence. This will keep your new faux hedge panels in place much better and will ensure your ties aren't getting caught and yank out your hard work.
5. To create a thick hedge look, you can attach hedge panels to both sides of your fence. Follow the same steps for the second side, but be careful when snipping cable ties so you don't cut leave or panels. The thick flora will hide your cable ties and help create a full hedge look.
6. Marvel at the natural beauty of your new boxwood privacy hedge. Invite the neighbors over to enjoy the gorgeous view and let them wonder how you were able to grow such a wonderful landscape piece in almost no time.
Tools Needed:
- Hammer & Nails
- Drill and Screws
- Anchors
- Spanner
- Steel Wire Grid
1. Of all the ways to install a synthetic boxwood hedge wall, attaching them to concrete or brick is the most difficult, but still doable. Begin the process by measuring out exactly what you need. Take measurements of your wall or space that you are looking to fill. If you are getting a bit creative, be sure to stencil or pencil draw your design beforehand to help with measuring. For help, simply speak with one of our helpful team members to discuss your project or vision.
2. Now that you have measured your space or design and ordered your MegaGrass ivy panels, you can start customizing them to fit the space or need you to have. You can create almost any shape or size you need by snipping the MegaGrass faux boxwood panels and reassembling them however you see fit. All of our hedge wall panels come with interlocking snaps that will allow you to securely piece them all together. If you had to cut any of them to fit your sizing, you can use cable or zip ties to reassemble them into the proper sizing.
3. Now that the measuring, planning, and customizing of panels are complete. The fun part begins! Attach your wire grid to your concrete or brick wall using screws and anchors or nails. Start by measuring where you will need your wire grid to be hung and start drilling holes for screws or nails. While it is possible to use concrete nails, we do recommend using screws and anchors as they tend to hold a little better and for longer periods of time, giving your wall that fresh and realistic look.
4. Next, you want to hang your fake hedge on the steel grid you just installed. To do this, you only need cable or zip ties, scissors, and a little bit of patience. Use the zip ties to attach your new synthetic boxwood hedge to the metal grid. Once you have the ties tightened properly, use scissors to snip the excess ties off the ends to provide a fully realistic look.
5. Sit back and enjoy your amazing work. All of the great features and benefits of our MegaGrass artificial hedge wall panels are now yours to enjoy. Let your guests know how amazing your faux hedge panels are, let them think you busted your hump doing a lot of hard landscape and yard work. No matter which you choose, your secret will always be safe with us.

The best things to do are: recycle, upcycle, and repurpose. It’s possible to breathe new life into your turf.
With so many talks about climate change and environmental destruction, consumers are now more inclined to choose eco-friendly products from environmentally responsible manufacturers and suppliers. As consumers, you’ll want the products you buy to be from companies with the same values as ours. As we push switching to sustainable lifestyles to save the Earth, we are trying to make choices that affect the world positively. Choosing artificial turf is no different.
The Oxford Dictionary defines recycling as the action or process of converting waste into reusable material. It’s basically taking an item for reuse, returning it to the cycle of utility instead of throwing it out.
Yes, it is! Artificial grass is made of common materials including polyethylene, polypropylene, and nylon. Most infill products available in the market nowadays are also made of natural materials like broken down stones. All of these are recyclable.
The problem has always been trying to sort out and separate the mentioned materials from each other. However, in the past, the machinery needed to do this was so expensive. It would cost a lot more to tear them apart and recycle them, compared to throwing it out to the landfill which costs nothing. This is probably why people used to believe that grass products being recycled is just a fantasy.
However, with the advancement of technology and new scientific developments, it is now easier to have turf recycled. In Europe, a company is already on the move and recycling turf. 23 facilities across Europe and North America are on their way, too!
Recycling facilities for artificial grass are now also present around the world due to its universal demand. In the US, some recyclers turn them into building products. They’re upcycling artificial turf into posts, planks, lumber, and irrigation pipes. Since the main material for turf is plastic, it’s highly recyclable and flexible. It can also be easily broken apart and changed into new forms of plastic. There exists such a thing as plastic sustainability, and it is saving a lot of resources more than wasting them.
Currently, if you want a green front yard, the choices are: to keep a natural grass lawn, use up water, pesticides, and fuel to maintain it. Or, you could install a blanket of artificial grass, without any of the regular maintenance needed, and you could even have it recycled.
First, infill is taken off. Then, the turf blades are separated from its backing, ground into pellets and re-entered into the cycle. This could either mean they will be formed again into artificial grass or will be used as polymers for fresh equipment. The backing is also ground up and recycled as raw materials as useful objects.
Developments have been made introducing a circular economy for recycling artificial turf. The same process is used, taking apart the different properties of the carpet. They are cleaned and sterilized, ready to make new turf out of. The pellets are then introduced as raw materials for the same cycle—and the same product. It’s now possible to make turf, from turf!
In countries all over the world, governments are using plastic as fillers for road base. Plastic is shredded into tiny pieces and mixed in with cement and asphalt to create cost-effective lightweight roads that are now considered a solution for the world’s growing plastic waste problem. In 2018, the University of California, San Diego, installed the first plastic and asphalt road in the United States.
Turf blades can be ground and shredded the same way. After your use, they can be introduced into our roads, making our highways stronger. This will also mean budget cuts for road works. Creating new things won’t be as expensive with recycled plastic products compared to those purely made of asphalt or cement alone.
Repurposing artificial turf at home is also possible. After it has served as your beautiful lawn for at least ten years, your turf’s life can still be extended for much more! Clean your turf using water and soap, cut it up and turn parts of it into washable outdoor mats. Or build your dog a pet run that he can play and sleep on! There are plenty of ideas out there to inspire you!
In repurposing a sports field of artificial grass, some use them as surfaces for batting cages, dugouts, indoor practice areas, driving ranges, sand trap-lining for erosion control, sidelines, and running track protective strips.
Grass recyclers have also combined fake grass with furniture to give a natural look to their homes. Lampshades are wrapped in turfgrass, and are used in chairs as a cushion for maximum comfort! You can even make your own hanging garden to add a homey feel to your living area. Because synthetic grass is made of plastic products, it is multipurpose and can be used in an endless number of ways.
There are a lot of sellers in the market with used artificial grass as their main product. These products still sell because they can be used for quite a number of things, not just as a surface for your lawn. However, these products are not advised to be used because there is no way to ensure where it has been on in its past life. It could have been contaminated with harmful chemicals, or other dangerous substances in its first use. Although, there’s nothing completely wrong with using secondhand turf. It’s only better to get something brand new as opposed to one that’s already been used by someone else. Get freshly manufactured artificial grass that you’ll be using first to dispel any and all doubts regarding the safety of your lawn.
]]>When it comes to artificial grass, there are a lot of different manufacturers to choose from. If you are overwhelmed by your choices, we’re here to help. We know you’re pretty excited about getting your artificial lawn and we totally understand. After all, who wouldn’t want a perfectly manicured lawn that requires no maintenance? MegaGrass is the only grass company that sells direct to retail customers. That means no middlemen or complications when you buy from us!
The most common question we get is: Which is the best synthetic grass I can get? When picking artificial grass, there are several factors that you have to consider to make sure you’re actually getting the best. Maybe you’re wondering where to get your grass. Perhaps you’re still having second thoughts if it can actually replace traditional grass. No matter the concern, you can read through this post to get all the answers you need.
Let’s start with the basics.
Are you looking for the best artificial grass for dogs? Maybe you’re after a putting green you can practice on in your own backyard. Perhaps you want to build a playground area for your kids. In terms of quality, all MegaGrass products are professionally tested to be 100% lead and latex free, along with being built with the highest quality fibers and thatching's. We stand behind our products, which is why we offer free samples and provide a 15 year warranty!
Every landscape project is unique. Your family probably won't want to sit on stiff and grip-heavy grass made for golfing. You also probably wouldn't install tall bladed turf like the MegaSport for golfing. The key is the pick the grass that helps to improve your personal lifestyle. We've tried to make it simple by narrowing it down to our six different grass products, each providing a solution for various customer needs.
Although we've helped to narrow down your choices to just 6 grasses, we understand sometimes customers are looking for something we don't offer. Our goal is not to sell you grass, but instead to provide you with a solution to your landscaping problems. If none of our products can achieve that, we have no problem telling customers to explore their options within the rest of the turf industry. After all, we just want you to be happy with your turf project results. The goal is to find quality grass that meets all your requirements. This grass has to get the job done while also looking realistic. By realistic, we mean no yellowing or balding spots like you’d usually see on real grass. To make sure your landscaping project turns out great, look for grasses that offer nice vibrant colors and strong backing material. Also, don't forget about safety! Always make sure the grass you're buying has been professionally tested for lead content and permeability. Yes, if you're wondering, all MegaGrass products are 100% lead and latex free, while also offering some of the best drainage systems out there.
Research is key! We can’t stress this step enough to those looking to make the switch to artificial grass. With so many buying options out there, make sure to see examples of their grass post installation, product reviews, and most importantly, the specifications and testing done of their grass. We also highly recommend getting free samples of any grass before you buy. This can give you better idea of how the grass looks and feels in person. If a seller doesn't offer free samples or warranty, you should proceed with caution. Cheap turf is not only a hard to install, but also usually turns out looking nothing like what you would expect.
Not all synthetic turf is created the same way. Depending on the type of grass, its component may vary a little or a lot compared to other variants. Luxury lawns look full and are bouncy. Sports turf is a bit more firm to provide a durable playing surface. Disposable grass mats may use low-quality materials. Fake turf with more than a decade of expected lifespan usually use high-grade materials. Color-wise, multi-tones can help make the turf look more realistic. Some specifications to consider are: blade shape, thatching color, density, blade height, and permeability.
Most yards, porches, or rooftops are set up a certain way. Homeowners usually have sections of their property set up in a way that’s convenient for them. Knowing the specifications of the installation area can help you decide which grass would fit best. If you must, sit with a contractor and lay down everything you know about your property. This will help them help you narrow down your choices down to the best. If you have any questions regarding installation, head over to our Q&A section or email us at support@megagrass.com
Artificial lawns are long-term investments. Not only do they offer no maintenance curb appeal, but they also increase the value of your home. A common concern is customers have is whether or not turf is worth it as an investment. The short answer is yes! Saving on gardening expenses and water bills can add up heavily over the years. Although the cost seems high today, it will pay for itself in the long run. Not to mention, having turf will increase the value of your home if you ever plan to move or sell it in the future. We understand that the initial cost can be overwhelming for some customers. Our best advice would be to look at the amount saved versus the amount spent to see if turf is a worthy investment for you.
The initial outlay requires a decent amount of planning. Always remember to account for tools, turf accessories, or fittings that you might need. When it comes to labor, secure the help of a reputable team. It may cost more, but note that proficiency and efficiency will get you the results you are looking for. Picking the wrong turf installer can be highly consequential. If they install it poorly, the turf will be ruined and the end result will be a disaster.
There is no be-all-end-all when it comes to synthetic turf. The perfect artificial grass is the one that fits your needs and lifestyle perfectly. Having this in mind will allow you to find the perfect landscaping solution.
How often will your grass be used on a daily basis? Does your home have lots of children? Do you have pets? What size are your pets? Definitely take traffic into consideration when choosing turf. If you buy a product not designed to withstand heavy use, you might not be able to get the full lifespan benefits of your new grass.
Pile height is the measurement of the blade length from just above the backing up to the tip. Long blades create a lush look that feels luxurious by creating a "fuller" look. However, longer blades can sometimes fall flat with heavy traffic. In general, you’d want blade lengths of 30-37mm. This may require brushing every now and then, but not as often as you would with large pile heights.
A dense turf means that there are more synthetic yarns per square foot of turf. The denser your grass is, the more durable it is. However, it may be more expensive. If your budget won’t allow you to buy premium quality turf, you can work with less pricey ones. Some customers have found that cheaper turf is better, especially if there is little to no traffic on it. One trick to make a turf look "fuller" is to pick a good infill.
Generally, the higher the quality, the heavier the turf is. It is easier to layout and rollover your yard too. Note that if you’re installing on patios, rooftops, or porches, it’s important you check the load bearing capacity of the building you’re installing to.
The backing of your turf contributes to its toughness. High-grade ones will not expand and contract when exposed to extreme temperatures. It also won’t shrink, suddenly show bubbles or ripples and tears. The infill, on the other hand, gives the grass a certain amount of bounce. The better the infill used, the more your lawn will feel springy. To see your options for different types of infill, check out our turf accessories page: https://megagrass.com/pages/installation-materials
You want a turf that will not melt when exposed to high temperatures and will retain its original shape. You also don’t want its color to easily fade with constant sun exposure. All of our products at MegaGrass have been professionally UV tested. If you decide to buy elsewhere, make sure it has been tested as well!
Green seems like the best option when faced with a load of samples. Who doesn’t want a healthy green color on their yards, right? Actually, some customers prefer the more "natural" look. Super green grass can sometimes be overwhelming. We recommend the multi tone turf for those that are looking for something more natural. If you want to mimic traditional grass, getting the color right is key, since natural grass usually doesn't come in just one tone.
Pro-tip for choosing the best color: get a sample and take it outside. See how it looks when placed beside concrete, walls, or anything that resembles the actual installation area. When choosing synthetic grass, the color choice is subjective. Whether you want a super green lawn or a more natural looking one, there are a lot of different options out there to choose from.
You deserve to enjoy your artificial grass. One of the best parts of having turf is no maintenance! High-quality turf does not need to be mowed or watered. If something spills on it, a quick rinse with the garden hose is usually more than enough to clean it. Go ahead, take a vacation, you deserve it!
Make sure to keep this list on hand before you make a purchase. You don’t want to end up with a bad looking lawn that you have to settle for until you can redo it all over again. The trick is to be completely aware of your wants and needs and make sure that the fake turf you choose fits the bill. If you have any questions, we're here to help. Fake turf installation problems are normal and can be easily prevented. Here we list down the most common fake grass installation problems. We also included possible workarounds to address them. We also have a great guide on how to install artificial grass for those that are ready to go!
It's just turf, how complicated can it be? What if we told you there were many different variants of artificial grass? Each type is designed for a specific use, with qualities that respond to a particular need. It’s common for first-timers to overlook their choices when choosing the right turf. For example, sometimes pet owners order fake grass meant for putting greens. They then end up with stiff grass blades that are uncomfortable for pets.
Under our MegaGrass products section, you will find several different types of artificial turf. Each of these specialize for a particular need. We've laid out the specifications of each grass we offer along with a simple name to make sure you get the right turf for your next project.
If a base is not prepared properly, it will be prone to holes and sinking spots. These holes are not visible once the fake turf has been installed, but they may cause future problems because water can accumulate in these crevices. Stagnant water can become a breeding space for insects and can cause drainage issues.
A good and solid sub base will make laying turf easy. It will hold everything together. This will stop your grass from sinking and prevent all other problems that come with it. If preparing the base on your own, try to make sure the ground is level and the base is even by filling any potholes you see prior to installation.
One key benefit of installing fake grass is convenience. Usually, there’s no need to apply any fertilizers or weed deterrents to stop weed growth. However, if you have had weed problems in the past, it may come back if you don't apply weed barrier.
Installing a good weed barrier prevents weeds from growing through the grass. This membrane will kill the weeds before they grow. MegaGrass offers weed barrier in our grass accessories section. We recommend installing the barrier at the bottom layer if you have pets. When you install it on top, there’s a chance that it may trap pet urine.
Nobody likes a smelly lawn. If you’re using fake turf as your pet’s potty or dog run, bad smells seem inevitable. Another concern during installation is the smell of adhesives. Some people even claim that they can smell the infill, days after their lawn has been installed.
You don’t have to live with a bad smelling lawn. MegaGrass offers pet odor neutralizer, which completely eliminates any smells from trapped urine, adhesive, and infill. Deodorizers will not harm the material of the turf.
The fake grass itself does not encourage the growth of moss or algae. In rare instances however, organic matter or debris trapped in the grass does. Moss or algae is tricky to remove so in this case, prevention is the best course of action.
Prevention is key when it comes to mold growth. A simple pressure washer or leaf blower once a week can completely prevent mold from growing. This way, there’ll be no need to use harsh chemicals on the same lawn that you, your family, or pets play in.
When the fake turf roll is not properly installed, the grass lifts at the edges. Visually, this will ruin the clean that you see in most finished jobs. Apart from the aesthetic disadvantage, lifted edges also pose a safety tripping hazard. There’s nothing worse than an ugly lawn that’s also dangerous for the homeowners.
Use sturdy fixings to secure the edges of your lawn. You can also seem the edges to get a nice rounded edge. This will guarantee that the edges will not lift and threaten your family or pets’ safety.
Drainage problems are some of the worst issues when it comes to installation. A poor draining lawn will collect water in all the wrong places and lead to puddles. If not sorted early, it can cost a lot in the long run.
Dig and use rubbles to fill areas where you want drainage to be smooth. It’s a great way to make sure that liquids pass through easily. A word of caution, never use wet clay or granite dust under your fake lawn. This will only slow your drainage more. You may also end up with a useless drainage system.
Aesthetics is one of the main reasons why people choose fake grass. After all the money and time spent on your landscape project, a line that runs all across the turf is the last thing you would want to see. Joint lines are caused by light bouncing off the grass blades that are pushed together.
Trying to fix this error at a later stage can be costly. To make sure this doesn’t happen, make sure you work with skilled and reputable installers. Refuse any offers to use timber or cable ties to push your turf rolls together. Usually this only occurs if the installation was done poorly.
Some fake grass from overseas come really cheap. The problem is, if anything goes wrong, you’ll have to wait days to process warranties. This can push back your completion date. It’ll also be hard to check the product if it’s shipping from far away.
Warranties are easier to process if you buy from a local company. It’s also easier to request free samples to better assess the turf quality before you commit. MegaGrass offers a 15 year warranty on all of our grass products. Why so long? We offer the highest quality grass in the market and stand behind our products. We are confident that as long as the installation goes smoothly, you will love you new grass from us!
The more you are aware of these issues, the better your chance of avoiding them. Getting everything right the first time can help you avoid costly repairs in the future.
If you are a DIYer, these are the issues that you may face when starting your project. If you’re mindful about them, you’ll be able to pull off your project with no problems.
If you’re hiring a contractor, make sure to ask about these concerns and how they plan to tackle them. Don’t hesitate to list your questions and expectations. Remember, your lawn is the face of your home. It deserves all the care it can get.

Grass plays a big part in landscaping. Size and impact wise, your turf is the first thing that onlookers will notice, long before they notice any other garden decors. Making a decision depends on a lot of things, things that are most important to you.
So how do you make a decision?
Everything starts with research. The more you learn about the specifics of your choices, the sooner you can take a pick. In this post, we will help you decide by showing the strengths and weaknesses of both live natural grass and fake grass.
Real grass requires regular watering. Depending on the location, it might even require watering in the morning and in the evening. Fake grass, on the other hand, requires occasional watering. To be specific, the only time you have to water fake grass is when you want to clean it. Hosing down the blades for a few seconds is enough to get rid of the dirt.
With fake grass, you never have to use harmful chemicals. This makes it perfectly safe for you and for any child to play on. This is also why more public play areas are starting to use fake grass. A real lawn is also a safe option as long as it has not been exposed to any kind of health hazards or toxins.
There’s nothing like the smell of freshly mowed lawn in the morning. That is an undeniable advantage that natural grass has over fake ones. In fact, fake grass companies are trying to reproduce this scent to be spritzed on fake turf. But as much as this smell is highly adored by many, the process that leads to it does more harm to the environment than people actually think. According to a Swedish study, an hour of running a lawnmower gives out nearly the same amount of pollution into the air as a 100-mile car trip
Both natural and fake lawn needs regular maintenance. The main difference is how often you need to do so. Natural grass requires a huge amount of water to get rid of dust or mud or other debris that sticks to the leaves.
The impact fake grass or natural grass fields have on the environment is important. After all, the environment is essential for our quality of life. Both types of grass can hurt and help in their own ways.
Fake grass is great because of the amount of water it saves. Water is one of the most basic natural resources we have. Saving as much of it as possible is vital. The cons of fake grass are the creation of pollution through manufacturing and the fact that it isn’t always biodegradable.
Natural grass benefits our environment because it is a living thing. Real grass contributes to the ecosystem by supplying oxygen, filtering pollution, and absorbing heat. With these benefits, natural grass has some drawbacks as well. Real grass is often sprayed with pesticides that move with the runoff water and dirties water systems.
For the costs of both grass types, the yard size will reflect a 1,000 square foot lawn.
Note: Water costs and amount of water needed will vary based on the place and the species of grass you choose.
The installation of a fake turf lawn has many factors that contribute to the final cost. This includes materials, fees, labor, overhead, and profit. The type of grass, company, and quality of labor has a major impact on the overall cost. A 1,000 square foot area would take about two to three days for a complete installation.
Pricing by square foot starts around $9 for a quality installation. Assuming a grass lawn of 1,000 square feet, the installation cost will be roughly $9,000.
There are two options for having a natural grass lawn – through sodding or seeding. Since sodding is pre-grown, it has a higher cost, compared to having to plant the seeds and nurturing the lawn yourself.
For both sod and seed lawn installation, a lawn irrigation system will be needed. The average cost of a sprinkler system is $2 per square foot, which will be $2,000 for 1,000 square feet of grass.
Pricing by the square foot for installing sod starts at $3.50 with a professional installer, which includes everything from removal of the current lawn to the disposal of debris. With a lawn size of 1,000 square feet, the sod installation will cost $3,500.
The total installation cost for installing sod with a sprinkler system will cost $5,500.
For a more affordable alternative for natural grass, seeding will cost about $0.05 per square foot when installed by yourself, or $50 for a 1,000 square foot area. Because only the seeds are being planted, the cost of installing a natural grass lawn will include thorough watering for the first eight weeks.
623 gallons of water or rain is equivalent to one inch of water for a 1,000 square foot area. The total amount of water needed for grass seed germination is about 40 inches of water or 24,920 gallons. This accounts for the 8 inches of moist soil needed before planting, 4 inches of moist soil immediately after planting, and 2 inches of moist soil twice a day until the seeds sprout.
One inch of water soaks about 6 inches of soil. Factoring in the cost of water for a single-family customer in San Diego, the cost of water based on the usage above will equal about $290 dollars (base fee of $24.74). This is exclusive to just watering the lawn. So depending on other water usages (i.e. showers, dishwashing, etc.), the cost of water can increase by 40%.
In total, growing grass from seeds to germination for a 1,000 square foot natural grass lawn with a sprinkler system will cost $2,340.
Considering the lifespan of a fake grass lawn is 25 years, we will use that as the time frame for care and maintenance costs.
The beauty of owning a fake grass lawn is the minimal care required. Care and maintenance include watering, brushing, and using odor control. Because there is little care required, the costs below will not factor in any labor.
Watering the lawn will help remove any dust or pollen that settles on top of the fake lawn. This can be done once a month and only needs a quick hose down, maybe about a quarter of an inch of water each rinse. For a 25 year span, we will assume a cost of $300 for hosing the 1,000 fake turf area down based on current San Diego water rates.
Brushing the fake turf helps restore the look of the lawn by fluffing up the fibers that are flat in high traffic areas. A brush will set you back about $40.
If you have pets, odor control should be used when rinsing the lawn every other month. A product such as Urea “Z” covers 2,500 square feet for every gallon. Costing $100 a gallon, the total cost for 25 years will be $6,000.
The sum of all the care and maintenance costs for fake grass equal $6,340, for homeowners with a pet. For those without a pet, the care and maintenance costs are about $340.
Maintenance and care that go into a natural grass lawn involve--mowing, edging, aeration, overseeding, fertilizing, weed control, and watering. Costs can be lowered if the equipment is purchased and tasks are completed by yourself. The costs below will factor in labor due to the amount of effort a natural grass lawn depends on.
For someone to mow, edge, and dispose of clippings for your natural grass lawn, you will be looking to pay at least $30 each visit. Depending on the climate, you should expect around two visits a month, which comes out to $720 a year. With the 25-year time frame in mind, total lawn mowing and edging will cost $18,000.
Aeration and overseeding are important to a natural grass lawn. Aeration allows air, water, and nutrients to penetrate the grassroots. Overseeding is for filling in bare spots and improving the lawn density. Both of these cost about $50 per 1,000 square feet and need to be done twice a year. The entire cost for aeration and overseeding will be $2,500 for 25 years.
Fertilizers keep weeds away and feed the grass. Fertilizing and weed control should be done about once every quarter or four times a year. The schedule for when this should be done for your lawn will depend on the grass type and climate. An average application will cost $60, or a total of $6,000 for 25 years.
Using the values above, we can find out how much water will be needed in 25 years. Since the water usage will be decreased due to the established grass, water costs per hundred cubic feet (HCF) or water rates will be less. Established grass needs about one to two inches of water per week. The total will be 1,950 inches or 1,214,850 Gallons of water for 25 years, costing a total of about $9,000 assuming the cost of water doesn’t change in San Diego.
Adding all the maintenance costs of a natural grass lawn, assuming that labor will not be done ourselves, we come to a total cost of $35,500. Again, the cost can be lowered if a lawn mower, lawn aerator, and other tools are purchased and the labor is conducted on your own.
We have shared the many benefits of natural grass and fake turf as well as the different costs that go into each. There are variables that can’t be accounted for since dwellers come from different climates and may use the lawn for different reasons. From the comparison above, the cost of natural grass over time ends up being the more costly option.
The upfront cost of fake turf will equal the amount paid for the installation and maintenance of a natural grass lawn in three to five years. Despite the high upfront costs of installing fake grass, you will end up saving your money and your local water supplies in the long run.
So which is the better option? Data wise, it’s artificial grass. But again, the decision is up to you. In the end, you get to decide which one fits your lifestyle and needs. Still not convinced? Visit megagrass.com for more information on the benefits of artificial grass over natural ones.

Follow our guide on how to install artificial grass yourself for a perfect finish without the heavy cost. This is the cheapest way to lay artificial grass. You don’t need to contact artificial turf installation companies because there is an easy way to install artificial grass. Just stick to our turf installation process, and you’ll have an awesome artificial lawn in no time.
This is MegaGrass’ guide on how to install artificial grass on dirt/soil surfaces.
Water pipes and electric lines may be found under the surface of your desired installation area. Cover sprinklers at the pipe level or remove them if you don’t need them anymore. Add required drainage pipes for easy water clear out. Mark the location of unused sprinklers to avoid uneven surfaces.
Protect your electric wires by moving them away from the perimeter by six to eight inches. Keep them out of the way so they won’t be damaged when you secure the turf’ edges. Lay them on the top of the subgrade (crushed rock) surface with u-nails later on.
Ground preparation before installing the base material for artificial turf for soil/dirt surfaces
The first thing you do before installing your grass is killing grassroots and weeds.
Spray the area with a non-toxic weed killer you trust. Do this at least two weeks before your desired installation date. Weed killers need ample time to work. Thoroughly fill your place with weed killers to make sure there’ll be no sign of life on your lawn.
To make room for your new base, dig the top by three to four inches. Then walk over the area or use a hand tamp to apply pressure to loose soil.
If you’re installing artificial grass atop well-draining soil, you’ll have little to no problems. This is because synthetic grass drains great. If on top of poorly draining soil, install an efficient drainage system. If your location experiences very light rain, drainage gaps every six inches around the perimeter should be enough.
Map out the perimeter so you have a clean line to separate your turf area from the other components in your lawn. Fence it as a guide so your turf won’t crawl out its designated space.
Roll your gopher wire out on the installation area little by little. Secure the laid parts by putting u-shaped staples on every few feet so it doesn’t move over time. After fully unrolling, use a wire cutter to trim it down to size.
Layout a geotextile layer at the bottom of the dug-up area. Before the artificial grass base material.
Using a wheelbarrow or shovel, scatter your base material. Generally, in places with a mild climate, you can use type 1 stone, gravel, crushed rock, decomposed granite, or any stones or rocks smaller than 3/8 inches as a base. Around 3-4 inches of the base material is needed to improve drainage and avoid slumping. The best sub-base for artificial grass is one that can absorb surface water fast.
Use a shovel or sand spreader to lay sharp sand 10-15mm thick on the top of your sub-base for it to be firm.
Use your hose and sprinkle your space with water. Be sure not to overwater your sub-base because your base can get washed away.
Use a plate compactor or plate tamper to compact the surface with. For areas with obstructions like trees, use a hand tamper. Or you can lay down a 2x4 plank of wood on the stones and hammer down.
Ideally, the base should be reduced to around 90% of its original depth, it should feel like concrete but retain its ability to drain. Pass back and forth with the compactor or tamper in overlapping directions for best compaction results.
If you have the budget, you can rent or buy a vibratory plate compactor—the most effective and time-saving option. A hand tamps can also be used at an affordable price.
Double check your area for high and low spots, fill or flatten if uneven. Add additional base if needed. Take down high areas with the rake, add base material for low spots.
Note the measurements of your area and compare it to your grass. Make it so that all the blades are facing the same direction so they will look more natural. Mark your spaces for easy reference. Use spray paint or chalk and write on the surface so you don’t forget that it’s the space for a certain cut.
Pro Tip: Draw lines for borders on your surface. This will serve as a guide for laying your seam fabric later on.
On an even surface (preferably not the one you will install it, so you won’t step on it) check your notes and your grass. When you roll your grass out to the desired measurement, mark it by cutting four (4) inches from the edge towards the center.
Pro Tip: Leave at least 1” allowance to be safe against miscalculations.
Roll your turf back and stop when your marked cuts are at the top of the roll. Cut along your marks to get your custom slice. Take the cut portion to your installation place.
Pro Tip: Use a chalk line (rope grazed with chalk) to mark your roll from end to end for a more even cut.
Roll out your synthetic grass over the installation area. Hold the edges and shake lightly so air can get under it, over the compacted stones. Don’t drag the grass over the base or you might ruin the smooth surface.
A carpet stretcher can stretch the strips of turf shortly before you fasten or seam them. Stretching the turf using this tool eliminates wrinkles, reduces expansion brought about by heat, and helps secure the surface tighter to the ground.
Set your second mat as close as you can to the one already laid. With small sections at a time, but their sides together like seaming two pieces of fabric. It should look like a tent that meets in the middle. Gaps should be kept within 1/8 of an inch to be unnoticeable. Cut off excess from the newly laid side if it overlaps with the one already fixed.
Ask for from two people when seaming patches of turf. Cut seam tape as long as your turf’s edges. Place it underneath the part where the sides meet. Keep them in place with 6-inch nails. One for each corner. Lift up the sides of your turf and ask your assistants to hold them. Pour in some glue and spread evenly through the entire tape.
Starting from the farther end, butt seams together little by little, with your assistants only releasing portions you need. Make sure that the turf doesn’t meet ahead of you laying it down and that their fibers are away from the glue up until the end.
A step above the sides of your newly seamed areas to make sure it sticks to the seam tape. You can also throw in some heavy objects over the seam.
Hammer nails into the ground every few inches. Remember not to trap any grass fibers underneath the nail’s head. Secure the turf perimeter. Use landscaping anchor pins or 4 – 6 inches galvanized stakes to fasten the turf in place. Place them just around the perimeter at around 6 – 8-inch intervals. And also along the seam. Although you need to hammer them flat, you should be extra careful and avoid excessive hammering because it can cause dips in your lawn.
Trim the excess artificial turf at least by 2 – 3 stitch rows out. The edges of the grass patch are the weakest parts of the turf. To avoid the edges of your artificial grass caving to either side, eliminate the problem early. Cut it off! You can use a utility knife or a carpet cutter to cut the underside of the turf.
If you have objects and obstructions in your space, cut your synthetic grass around it. For easier spotting, lean it against the obstacle and fold it back. Estimate where to start your relief cuts by marking from the base going up. Continue until the obstruction’s base is covered by turf.
If there are trees or posts, make big relief cuts for the synthetic grass to bend across.
When installing artificial turf around trees and other obstructions, the goal is to have relief cut touch the back of the tree/obstruction.
When cutting in the shape of a patio, fold back portions piece by piece and cut towards the center from the edge.
When cutting around sidewalks, patios, and surfaces almost in its level, pull back on the cut part while slicing so you can see what you’re cutting.
Relief cuts should be close enough to still allow the turf to lay flat while the flaps can still go up the objects. For long cuts, cut short distances at a time and repeatedly compare the edges to make sure there are no visible gaps. Size the turf little by little so you don’t cut off more than necessary.
After all the relief cuts have been made, cut off the patches piece by piece.
Brush your fake grass upwards to let infill inside. (If you’re using a power broom, you don’t need to brush first before dumping the infill.) Make sure your grass is completely dry before adding the infill.
Using a shovel, lay sand down in back dragging motion. Take a step backward while lowering the sand. Apply the first half evenly (about 1.25 lbs per square foot of turf on the first lay) everywhere before starting on the second wave to complete your infill. You can also use a sand spreader for this step.
Broom or brush the turf until the sand sinks completely below the grass. Check for highs and lows, brush out the highs and add more infill to the lows.
Brush your lawn again one last time and remove any sand left behind. Optional: use a leaf blower.
Set the infill by watering the lawn. Check the next day if you like the final result. If it’s not bouncy enough for you, or the grass blades are too exposed, add another infill layer and rake. Optional: Use a leaf blower again to clear out debris.
Add life to your lawn by planting flowers or herbs in pots and placing them on top your artificial grass. You can also have a picnic table just outside your house. The possibilities are endless!
We’ve got that covered, too!
For concrete surfaces:
During this step, hose your area thoroughly. Check to see if there are puddles that form. If there are, drill drainage holes. Use a 16mm bit for drilling holes and fill them with 10mm shingle to prevent puddles when it rains.
Check uneven surfaces. If they aren’t too uneven and can be fixed, use the self-leveling compound. Follow the instructions on the packaging.
Cover your entire area with foam/shock pads. Because concrete is a hard surface, you’ll need the foam/shock pads for support in case anyone falls on the surface. If there are different sections of foam or shock pads (as opposed to a whole roll) tape them together with masking tape. Lift it to one side so you can easily spread the glue.
Mix the glue and hardener. Apply it directly to your surface and scatter. Use about 2-3mm of glue to make sure everything sticks. Work quickly because the glue hardens fast.
Roll out your artificial grass over the foam. Cut it to size using a turf cutter or knife.
Measure your artificial turf patches.
Seam your turf pieces together.
Set your mats as close as you can together. With small sections at a time, place their sides together like seaming two pieces of fabric. It should look like a tent that meets in the middle. Gaps should be kept within 1/8 of an inch to be unnoticeable. Cut off excess from the newly laid side if it overlaps with the one already fixed.
Lay your seam tape out.
Stitch.
Starting from the farther end, tent seams together little by little, with your assistants only releasing portions you need. Make sure that the turf doesn’t meet ahead of you laying it down and that their fibers are away from the glue up until the end.
Apply pressure.
A step above the sides of your newly seamed areas to make sure it sticks to the seam tape.
Secure your newly installed artificial lawn by applying glue on all the edges. Make sure there are no gaps when you glue. Leave it alone to dry.
Apply the first half evenly (about 1.25 lbs per square foot of turf on the first lay) all over before starting on the second wave to complete your infill.
Check on the next day if you like the final result. If it’s not bouncy enough for you, or the grass blades are too exposed, add another infill layer and rake. Optional: Use a leaf blower again to clear out debris.

Think of it as a recipe. Before you start, you need to have all your ingredients ready in front of you because this saves you the trouble from finding out you need milk and realizing you don’t have any. It also gives you a chance to write a grocery list so you can shop for everything before you start. Trust us, you’ll be thankful for the time you save by having everything on hand.
We understand your time is precious, so we want to make sure your turf installation is a breeze. Ready to find out how easy it is to lay artificial grass?
Pro Tip: Before digging out your soil or dirt, plan on where to put or dispose of it.
This can be used to compact your base.
There are available materials in the market that can cut and dig your soil out in a cinch! Check out your local hardware. Try them out for yourself. Find one you’re comfortable using.
If your area is a go-to place for gophers, moles, or voles, you shouldn’t ignore this extra precaution. But even if they don’t frequent your place, a gopher wire is a great defense for unwanted visitors.
Depending on where you are located, weeds may still persist despite having artificial turf. If you live in an area where weeds grow uncontrollably, weed membrane can help lessen their presence in your lawn. However, if weed only grows occasionally in your place, you’ll be fine without it. As long as you properly kill them from the roots before installation.
Artificial turf is not prone to weed infestations. But it could be a problem if left alone to scatter and grow. They’re likely to sneak up on you if leaves and other garden debris clog your turf’s drainage. So to avoid them, it’s good practice to regularly rake and brush your synthetic turf.
Pro Tip: Install a weed membrane twice. Over and under your base, for security against weeds.
Pro Tip: We don't advise using weed membrane if the turf will be pooped and peed on by your fur baby. because membrane or matting can soak up your pet’s urine or diluted poop and the smell might linger leaving you with stinky turf.
Keep them out of the way so they won’t be damaged when you secure the turf edges. Lay them on the top of the subgrade (crushed rock) surface with u-nails later on.
Weeds shouldn’t ruin your newly installed artificial lawn. Nor should weeds ruin your lawn years later. The first thing you do before installing your grass is to kill grassroots and weeds.
Spray the area with a trusted non-toxic weed killer and spray at least two weeks before your desired installation date. Weed killers need ample time to work. Thoroughly fill your place with weed killers to make sure there’ll be no sign of life on your lawn.
Double check to see if there are any vegetation left because they could make lumps or pierce your artificial grass if they grow from underneath. They can create dangerous uneven spaces for your family and pets. Pro tip: When excavating wet soil, let it dry for a few days. Drying it will minimize slumping.
Pro Tip: When excavating wet soil, let it dry for a few days. Drying it will minimize slumping.
To make room for your new base, dig the top layer by three to four inches. Then walk over the area or use a hand tamp to apply pressure to loose soil
Pro Tip: If you don’t have a hand tamp, use a plank and hammer on it!
If you’re installing artificial grass atop well-draining soil, you’ll have little to no problems. This is because synthetic grass drains great. If on top of poorly draining soil, install an efficient drainage system. If your location experiences very light rain, drainage gaps every six inches around the perimeter should be enough.
Pro Tip: Drainage is the most important thing you have to take into account when it comes to artificial grass. Poorly draining artificial grass is the worst!
Map out the perimeter so you have a clean line to separate your turf area from the other components in your lawn. Fence it as a guide so your turf won’t crawl out of its designated space.
Pro Tip: The height of your boundaries must be shorter than your grass. Otherwise, it could be a drainage problem. For example, if your grass ends in concrete pavement, the concrete should not be taller than the grass. The water won’t have anywhere to go. It will remain trapped underneath grass rather than flowing to waterways.
Roll your gopher wire out on the installation area little by little. Secure the laid parts by putting u-shaped staples on every few feet so it doesn’t move over time. After fully unrolling, use a wire cutter to trim it down to size.
If one roll of wire is not enough, lay more down. Overlap the mesh by at least 6 inches and secure them together. There shouldn’t be any gaps so rodents won’t be able to dig up your upper layers.
The weed barrier is the perfect addition to your project because his extra step lessens the likelihood of having weeds poking through your synthetic turf. It’s an investment that won’t break the bank to include in your installation. Aside from weed, the barrier can also help deter gophers and earthworms.
Layout a geotextile layer at the bottom of the dug-up area. Before the artificial grass base material. This barrier is a bit heavy, though. You may need extra hands for help.
Pro Tip: You can add another weed barrier after laying your artificial grass subbase material.
Not all concrete can be used as a base for installing artificial grass. It has to be a solid foundation. If there are large cracks causing loose and edged pieces, it’s likely your grass won’t be installed properly. If this is the case, it’s better to break your concrete and follow the installation procedure for grass and dirt. Surfaces which are not leveled will be a future hazard.
However, you can use self-leveling compounds to fix minor cracks. If the surface is stable and flat, then it’ll be okay to have artificial grass installed. Ensure proper drainage when it comes to concrete surfaces because mold and mildew can come from water settling.
Materials needed:
During this step, hose your area thoroughly. Check to see if there are puddles that form. If there are, drill drainage holes. Use a 16mm bit for drilling holes and fill them with 10mm shingle to prevent puddles when it rains.
Check uneven surfaces. If they aren’t too uneven and can be fixed, use the self-leveling compound. Follow the instructions on the packaging.
Cover your entire area with foam/shock pads. Because concrete is a hard surface, you’ll need the foam/shock pads for support in case anyone falls on the surface. If there are different sections of foam or shock pads (as opposed to a whole roll) join them together with gaffer tape. Lift it to one side so you can easily spread the glue.
Mix the glue and hardener. Apply it directly to your surface and scatter. Use about 2-3mm of glue to make sure everything sticks. Work quickly because the glue hardens fast.
Note: If there are no drainage holes, leave gaps in your glue so that the water can run down to the concrete.
Materials needed:
Use a measuring tape to size up your area
Purchase artificial grass the size of your balcony plus a few inches on every side. It’s better to be safe having too much, than not having enough.
Sweep debris off. Mop the floor with water and anti-bacterial cleaners or bleach to ensure that it’s spick and span.
Ensure that you have drainage if your artificial grass is too heavy to clean elsewhere. If your balcony is only a small space, you can wash the grass inside and hang it out to dry.

Artificial grass is a flexible carpet of greenery. Like all carpets, it works well with solid and sturdy surfaces. We strongly advise against laying them down on soft areas like sand. Imagine how problematic it is having to walk on a holed carpet with sand underneath. And if your surface is grassy, it is advised to dig out your grass and use the procedure for soil and dirt.
Infills and other accessories.
Toward the end of your installation process, you will need infill because it will keep your grass standing upright. Infill is usually made from the ground up stones or volcanic ash. You can find more options at the MegaGrass shop.
Accessories mentioned above and other tools are also available in the shop.

Grades of artificial grass differ depending on your needs
First, decide on what you’ll be using it for. Will it be a lawn? Playground? Doggie haven? If you want all these, we suggest you border your area. Install different types of grass for different uses for best results!
Artificial turf lasts an average of 10-20 years.
This is the shorter material created to imitate the dead blades of grass. They are usually created using various colors to achieve a realistic dried out look.
The amount of foot traffic that the turf can regularly and collectively withstand over the years.
Foot traffic usually depends on where you’ll install the synthetic turf. If it’s out front like your patio, it may get medium to heavy foot traffic. This depends on how many of you will walk through it. If you’re positioning the turf on a lawn only for aesthetics, a low traffic capable grass is great already. For high traffic areas, we advise that you get artificial grass that can withstand pressure. You don’t want your artificial grass to have footprints all over them. Or worse, they could all be flattened.
MegaGrass offers artificial grass for every type of traffic.
MegaGolf – low–medium traffic.
MegaPet – low–medium traffic.
MegaPlay – medium traffic.
MegaPorch – medium traffic.
MegaLawn – medium-high traffic.
MegaSport – medium-high traffic.
MegaGrass blades and layers are top notches, Built to look and feel like real grass, t the realistic texture and color of our artificial turf is comparable to a natural lawn. And they’re made of resilient, non-toxic materials designed to last for decades. Our grass is so durable, we have a 15-year warranty policy to back it up.
Pile height or blade length is the measured length of the grass fiber from the backing to the tip. It is the length of the longest blade that can be found in your turf. A sufficient pile height can make the turf look like a perfectly grown bed of grass.
Artificial grass for pets usually has lower blade lengths. This helps prevent your furry friends from playing tug of war with the turf.
Because natural grass blades stand upright, it is important that turf blades also stand the same way. However, because they are stitched underneath instead of growing out, they don’t naturally position themselves straight. Generally, the longer the blade, the less resilient it is. Longer blade length is not suggested for high traffic areas. But effects can vary depending on blade shape, foot traffic, and other factors.
Artificial grass weight is measured in two ways: face weight and backing weight.
Face weight is the ounces of yarns per square yard of the turf.
Backing weight is the total of the turf’s primary backing and secondary coating for every square yard of turf
Total turf weight is the value of adding face weight and backing weight.
The density of artificial grass directly affects the quality of artificial turf. Density is determined by face weight and pile height. The higher these factors are, the denser the turf. And the better the quality.
It is calculated this way: face weight/pile height.
For example, MegaLawn Pro’s face weight is 66 oz. and its pile height is 1.75 inches. MegaLawn Pro’s density is 66/1.75 = 37.71. Compared to MegaSport Platinum, which has a face weight of 80 oz and a pile height of 1.63 inches. MegaSport Platinum’s density is 49.08. This means that even if MegaSport has shorter blades, it is designed to last longer than MegaLawn and can withstand more traffic.
Artificial grass comes in shades of brown and green to mimic real grass color. It even has thatch (a material used to imitate dead grass) to give you a realistic look. MegaGrass comes in shades of emerald green, olive green, brown, bi-color, and field green.
Artificial grass—from the fibers to the backing—is designed to prevent damage from ordinary wear and tear. Its durability is measured by resilience in foot traffic areas where installed and has the capacity to avoid rips and breakage. The turf stays put together even when pulled from the blades. MegaGrassis is strong and doesn't give in to human nor pet pressure.

We’d be lying if we told you that artificial grass will thrive even when neglected. It won’t. Although it will look lush without daily watering nor weekly mowing, your turf will get old. Prolong its life by helping it age with grace—through proper maintenance.
Yes! Use a leaf blower, stiff brush or rake to remove leaves and other debris. If you have trees and hedges, trim them to lessen falling leaves. Use turf deodorizer to drive away from the stench of pet urine. (An alternative to this could be baking soda washed out by a water and vinegar solution.)
If you’re dealing with solid waste: scoop it out when dry and rinse. If loose, remove and apply natural disinfectants or vinegar on the spot where the waste was. Hose away. If you’re dealing with liquids: Simply rinse. Try to water your turf once a week or twice a month.
Do not use strong water pressure when rinsing. Avoid chemicals, acids, alcohol. Use only natural cleaners for your turf’s health and yours.
Brush your new lawn regularly to the opposite direction of the strands (weekly or twice a month) to remove debris. Do this gently so you don’t damage the turf. Use a medium, soft bristle brush that won’t be too harsh.
Yes, but the water needs to flow somewhere. The backing for artificial grass has holes for the water to pass through. It is important when installing artificial grass to consider a drainage system. If artificial grass does not drain properly, it will be a major hassle.
MegaGrass products drain about 23 gallons of water per hour.
If your artificial grass does not drain well, water will build upon the surface. This can lead to mold, mildew and even accidents. Spores and bacteria could grow on your turf. The turf’s mat is designed to let water freely pass to the base without any hindrances. But if it doesn’t lead to a drain or canal or waterway, your lawn could look like one big puddle.
PE: Polyethylene – most straight blades and fibers are made of PE. It’s less expensive than other materials, but it’s soft and relatively durable. It’s also nonporous and easy to clean. It’s the kind of plastic used to make children’s toys, grocery bags, and even bullet-proof vests.
PP: Polypropylene – makes up most curled thatch fibers. Harder and more brittle than PE. It’s durable and nonporous too. This is commonly used for plastic utensils and microwavable containers.
PA: Nylon – most durable of the three. Wear and tear resistant, but more expensive. It’s also porous (meaning it can be stained by color and smell) but it works well against heat.
Yes, it is! It can help you conserve water. It lessens your carbon emissions as well!
Plastic artificial grass is eco-friendly. If we didn’t use plastic, there would be more energy needed and more waste generated. Imagine having a car without plastic parts. It would be so heavy that more fuel will be needed for it to move. Likewise, natural grass versus artificial grass. The fact that its plastic means there would be less water and no oil used in keeping your lawn perfectly manicured.

For soil and dirt, you will need a sub-base. The soil in most areas contracts and expands depending on temperature and climate. Artificial grass material was made porous so water can pass through, if your artificial grass sub-base material is not installed properly, it could cause wrinkles and gaps in your turf. Uneven surfaces can create dips in your lawn and cause accidents.
The best sub-base for artificial grass is one that functions like native soil. If artificial grass is installed correctly in your lawn, your turf will last longer!
Drainage is a Must, Artificial Grass doesn’t drain itself.
The quality of your artificial grass relies on the quality of your base. This is because the base for artificial grass acts as drainage. Even top synthetic grass won’t last long in a poor sub-base. The best base for turf is one that can absorb and drain water from the surface!
If your artificial grass does not drain well, water will build on the surface. This can lead to mold, mildew, and in the worst cases: accidents. Spores and bacteria could grow on your turf. The turf’s backing is designed with multiple drainage holes to let water freely pass to the base with no problems. But if it doesn’t lead to a drain or canal or waterway, your lawn could look like one big puddle.
Avoid this by carefully planning your drainage before artificial grass installation. Ensure that rainwater and other liquids (like dog pee) have somewhere to go. Otherwise, fluids will stay on your lawn and breed insects, weeds, other unwanted visitors, and will surely be a pain to deal with later on. Not to mention, it can cause wrinkles in your turf over time.
Before you install your sub-base, you first have to prepare the area. This contains a recap of area preparation. Preparation is key!.
Water pipes and electric lines may be found under the surface of your desired installation area. Cover sprinklers at the pipe level or remove them if you don’t need them anymore. Add required drainage pipes for easy water clear out. Mark the location of unused sprinklers to avoid uneven surfaces.
The first thing you do before installing your grass is to kill grassroots and weeds.
Spray the area with a non-toxic weed killer you trust. Do this at least two weeks before your desired installation date. Weed killers need ample time to work. Thoroughly fill your space with weed killers to make sure there’ll be no sign of life on your lawn.
To make room for your new base, dig the top layer by three to four inches.
Map out the perimeter so you have a clean line to separate your turf area from the other components in your lawn using a bender board. Fence it as a guide so your turf won’t crawl out of its designated space.
Roll your gopher wire out on the installation area little by little. Secure the parts by putting u-shaped staples on every few feet so it doesn’t move over time. After completely unrolling, use a wire cutter to trim it down to size.
Layout a geotextile layer at the bottom of the dug-up area. Before the artificial grass base material.
During this step, hose your area thoroughly. Check to see if there are puddles that form. If there are, drill drainage holes. Use a 16mm bit for drilling holes and fill them with 10mm shingle to prevent puddles when it rains.
Use a measuring tape to size up your area.
Purchase artificial grass the size of your balcony plus a few inches on every side.
Sweep debris off. Mop the floor with water and anti-bacterial cleaners or bleach to ensure that it’s spick and span.
Ensure that you have drainage if your artificial grass is too heavy to clean elsewhere.
Depending on your location, your material and depth could vary. Where there are harsh winters like Minnesota or Wisconsin, at least 6-8 inches of the trench is needed to accommodate extreme weather that expands and contracts the grass. areas like Arizona and Nevada already have decomposed granite and crushed rock beneath it, so there is no need to add base materials.
What sand do you put under artificial grass? Don’t go for fine. Don’t go for builder’s sand either. Sharp sand is coarse and has larger grains and is used for concrete.
This can help you transport your sub-base materials quicker all over the area.
Level your sub-base for artificial grass with the most efficient machine. You can rent this at equipment stores.
A shovel can be used to lay sand on your area but a sand spreader helps make the job easier!
Using a wheelbarrow or shovel, scatter your base material. Generally, in places with a mild climate, you can use the following: type 1 stone, gravel, crushed rock, decomposed granite, or any stones or rocks smaller than 3/8 inches as a base. Around 3-4 inches of the base material is needed to improve drainage and avoid slumping.
Mega Tip: Sand for artificial grass is great for easy drainage. Infill for artificial grass is also made of crushed rock. Don’t put excessive sand on your installation area. Too much sand can cause dips when your artificial grass is installed.
Use a shovel or sand spreader to lay sharp sand 10-15mm thick on the top of your sub-base for it to be firm.
Use your hose and sprinkle the installation space with water. Be sure not to overwater your sub-base because the rocks can get washed away. This can lead to uneven surfaces, not to mention it can put portions of your base to waste.
Switch back and forth with the compactor or tamper in overlapping directions for best compaction results.
If you have the budget, you can rent or buy a vibratory plate compactor—the most effective and time-saving option. Hand stamps can also be used at an affordable price.
Double check your area for high and low spots, fill or flatten if uneven. Add additional base if needed. Take down high areas with a rake, add base material for low spots.
You can install a weed barrier before and after your sub-base. This is an additional layer of protection to avoid weeds and other pests.
There you have a newly installed base that’ll hold your artificial turf for the years to come.
You don’t need to install a sub-base for concrete surfaces because you won’t be able to dig. But it is highly advised to put foam or shock pads underneath your turf to avoid any injury. Unlike a typical soil sub-base, concrete is hard. Any slips or falls can cause serious problems, to prevent this by having an extra layer of protection and invest in good quality shock pads.
It is also recommended to demolish your concrete surface and follow the sub-base installation for soil instead.
No permanent installation is needed for balconies and other small hard floor areas.

It’s also a fact that this seemingly small inconvenience is a lot more frustrating than it sounds because hey, let’s admit it, the last thing you want on a bright, beautiful, and warm sunny day is red-hot artificial turf to sit on. But have you ever considered that maybe you don’t really have to deal with this nuisance after all?
Here at MegaGrass, our mission is to give you back more of your time, and take the work and worry away from your landscaping needs. There’s nothing we want more than to be able to provide you with the best experience humanly possible. We are constantly on the lookout for the best synthetic turf technology in order to cater to your specific needs. Even though our turf can withstand 176 oF and our blades are designed to deflect light and promote air circulation on artificial grass, there’s always room for improvement.
Today, we’re happy to offer another innovative solution to keep your turf from turning into a scorching desert come summertime.
The To Cool synthetic turf cooling system can lower your turf’s temperature down by 50oF even during warm summer months. It’s perfect for artificial lawns that aim to provide unparalleled comfort not available anywhere else.
To Cool synthetic turf solution works on the evaporative cooling principle – in terms we can understand - it helps to store moisture within the synthetic turf systems. When solar energy heats the turf, the evaporation process takes place. The solar energy, instead of heating the thermoplastic turf blades (aka Polyethylene, the primary material used to manufacture the fibers), is redirected to the water source, efficiently preventing the turf fibers’ temperature from going up.
Most common infill materials trap solar rays and heat the surface to 150-180 degrees. The To Cool eco-friendly, healthy, and cost-effective infill solution cools down synthetic turf by an applied principle of evaporative cooling. Testing has shown that the To Cool systems lower the surface temperature down by 30 to 50oF.
To Cool also throws in the benefit of an antimicrobial additive, BacShield. What sets BacShield apart from other additives is its ability to not just clean the surface. BacShield is known to fight harmful microorganisms including bacteria, protozoans, viruses, and fungi such as mold and mildew.
Hundreds of volatile compounds of bacterial cultures produce a lot of smells, and mostly not ones we like. When these microbes come into contact with the turf surface, the antimicrobial agents penetrate its cell walls and disrupt key cell functions to limit microbial growth and reproduction.

Not at all! You can use a backpack sprayer for smaller applications, a tote-sprayer for medium to large applications, or a specialized automated “ride-on” equipment (available for sport-field applications) that will bring up the infill, coat it, and groom it back down.
Often, especially in pet turf applications, highly porous minerals are used to absorb ammonia. The problem is, these particles eventually reach their saturation point similar to what happens to cat litter. After reaching that point, the same minerals will not be able to do what it was intended to any longer.
This is where T° Cool with BacShield sets itself apart from other turfs in the market. With T° Cool, you no longer have to worry about offensive odors nor do you need to replace infill. Re-application is only required every 3 to 4 years, efficiently conserving your valuable resources, time, and energy.
For more than a decade we’ve been serving technologically advanced products with higher melting points to our friends in hot places, weather and waterproof varieties to our families with four seasons, maximum permeability for puppies both big and small, and a competitive 25-year lush-life guarantee for everyone under the sun.

MegaGrass prices depend on a lot of factors such as quantity, size, type, etc. If you wish to learn more about artificial lawn costs, click on this link to compare lawn products.
Please note that T°Cool™ Needs a Water Source. This technology stores moisture while the synthetic turf is being watered. As the temperature increases, the moisture is slowly released -- cooling the synthetic turf surface through natural evaporation. T°Cool™ works best in the summer months when the sun is at its hottest. As more heat is absorbed the more the cooling effect is released. A ¼” watering tool can keep the turf cool for several days depending on various conditions.

Synthetic grass terms to be familiar with:
Backing Weight |
Backing weight is the total weight of the turf’s primary backing and the secondary coating for every square yard of turf. The backing is the part of the artificial turf that holds everything together, so it’s mandatory that this component can take the pressure. The higher the backing weight, the more durable it is. You may consider products with lower backing weight for purely decorative purposes. Learn more about Backing Weight here |
|
|
Blade Design |
Refers to the shape and style of every single piece of grass blade. Although a minute detail, this greatly affects the performance of the turf. Learn more about our blade designs here. |
|
|
Blade/Pile Height |
The blade or pile height is the length of the longest blade that can be found in your turf. A sufficient pile height can make the turf look like a perfectly grown bed of grass. Learn about our Blade/Pile Height options here. |
|
|
Face Weight |
Refers to the number of ounces of yarns used per square yard of the turf. Simply put, the higher the face weight, the denser and longer the artificial grass is. This also makes the turf feel softer and is considered a key indicator of overall turf quality. Learn about our Face Weight choices here. |
|
|
Infill |
Most people don’t know that synthetic turf doesn’t actually stand up on its own. It’s the infill that keeps the blades standing upright and serves as protection for the backing. It’s also the infill that helps the grass retain its bouncy feel over the years. Learn more about our Infill range here. |
|
|
Lush Life |
Refers to the overall condition of the turf. |
|
|
Permeability |
The quality of the artificial turf that causes it to allow liquids to easily pass through it. This is an important factor to consider when buying artificial grass for applications that require regular washing. |

Owning a home is a source of pride and with that comes the beauty of a freshly cut lawn. But with the increasing amount of home responsibilities, taking care of grass can become more of a chore than a source of pride. For others, hotter climates prevent natural grass from growing in abundance, making it especially challenging to decorate an outdoor space. MegaLawn has many qualities that can turn home landscaping into a dream come true. Lead-free, lush, and able to stay cool in variable temperatures, this synthetic grass is a sweet solution for family-friendly yards.
Perfect for entertaining, MegaLawn Pro is a far cry from the stiff, shiny turf of yesteryear. With durable, thick S-shaped Sahara blades, the Pro is built to withstand moderate traffic, making it an ideal green stretch for play time. Aesthetically appealing, it's emerald and lime green colored thatch and patch blends in seamlessly for an ultra-realistic tone. Its ability to drain up to 23 gallons of water an hour makes it an excellent trimming around pools, hot tubs, and water slides. With a blade height of 1.75” and a 66 oz face weight density, you’ll love sinking your toes into this comfortable green patch.
Looking for a statement piece that’ll impress even your in-laws? The MegaLawn Platinum is up for the challenge, all while looking luxurious. Needled with a T-shaped Summit blade that stands up to the toughest crowds, this lush grass carpet can withstand heavier foot and furniture traffic, making it the best companion for higher usage activities. Its tough backing and 92 oz face weight density creates a lusher experience that makes the turf feel elegantly soft to the touch. Available in brilliant emerald green and perky lime green, you'll have the choice to create the perfect lawn.
Real grass has a mind of its own. Not only does it grow how it likes (aka in patches), it’s also a time suck when it comes to keeping it maintained. Once MegaLawn is installed in your outdoor living space, you won’t need to tend to it for years! Keep your lawn looking its best in any season, any weather and for every outdoor activity, without the extra work. The quality of the blades and backing not only make it perfect for your lawn but easy on your wallet as well. With a fifteen year warranty, you can accentuate your home with beautiful outdoor landscaping without compromising your budget. By removing the use of a lawn mower, you can also save the environment by emitting fewer carbon emissions into the air. Even the afterlife of the grass can be useful. Get creative and repurpose your expired grass for art projects, pet roof thatching and more!
You want the best for your pet, and we want the best for your lawn (and your pet). But sometimes, the two don’t always go well together. Pets love the outdoors and enjoy a padded, green turf to play in. Unfortunately, their joy doesn’t always translate into yours when you’re stuck cleaning up muddy paws prints off floors and patio windows. Even worse is keeping them cooped up in the house to avoid pesticide exposure while the lawn is being treated. Undergoing any kind of landscaping or home renovation project can be daunting, but when thinking about long-term goals, certain projects can be worth the time and effort you put into them. If you’re looking to get rid of lawn chores and lower your lawn maintenance expenses, installing artificial grass can be a smart option for you. Durable and long-lasting, fake grass is a great investment for spaces you intend to spend a lot of time in. It’s also an excellent option in climates where the grass is sparse, as in the Nevada and Arizona deserts. From dog lovers to sports enthusiasts, artificial grass caters to a wide range of people, activities, and uses. Get the look and feel of real grass without the recurring costs and maintenance that goes into its upkeep. Even better, the environment can benefit from your choice, removing the emissions of carbon dioxide fuels that are released when mowing the lawn.
When done properly, laying artificial grass can lead to owning a beautiful, low maintenance lawn that will last for decades. By following these three foundational steps, you’ll learn how to lay artificial grass correctly and with minimal issue. The first step is to prepare the area. This includes removing any weeds down to the root, as well as removing the top layer of soil if you plan on laying synthetic grass over dirt. Drainage is key, so if your natural landscape allows sufficient draining, you’re set! But if not, you’ll need to consider installing a drainage system to avoid any slippery accidents in the long run. To keep the grass from slumping, install a barrier as well. The next step is to install the base, which can vary in material depending on your environment. After you have graded the base, wet it slightly to prepare it for compaction. Begin unfurling the lawn while the base dries to allow it to reshape itself. The last step is to install the lawn. The most important piece here is to stretch, not drag the lawn over your base. This will help prevent any rough edges and keep the surface smooth. For more information, you can check out our detailed installation instructions that’ll guide you through every step in the process.
When buying artificial grass, the cost can be a leading factor in your decision making. High-quality grass involves extensive research and careful development into how the grass will perform over time and under certain conditions. While you may be able to find turf for sale that costs less, the quality of the grass you get may cause you to replace it after a few years, or worse, a few months. Investing in high performing synthetic grass will help your home look its best for years to come. If you’re having troubling justifying the artificial grass price, you can always opt in for financing alternatives. Many manufacturers work with your budget to make sure your landscaping dreams come true. Check out our artificial grass cost calculator to get an accurate estimate on your lawn size.
One of the many beauties of purchasing synthetic grass is that it’s practically maintenance free. It requires no mowing, watering or fertilizing. But it does require some care. Since the grass is exposed to outside elements, dust can get in between the blades. With an occasional rake to keep the leaves at bay and a brush to keep the blades standing up, you won’t have to spend too much time keeping your lawn in perfect condition. For bigger messes like puppy waste, barbeque cleanup or other outdoor leftovers, a quick soapy wash can do the trick. In the same way you wipe down a countertop after cooking, fake grass can be washed occasionally with mild detergent and water. Thanks to its high permeability levels, the grass will also return back to its dry state quickly so that you can get back outside to enjoy your lawn.

Our list below demonstrates just how flexible artificial grass rolls can be, and which surfaces they can best work with.
Traditional and easy
Artificial grass carpet rolls are specially designed for use as lawns, dog runs, recreational areas, and putting greens. As such, it is ideally placed on properly prepared soil. The great thing about this application is that even though extensive planning is required to level the ground and put the whole drainage system together, it will work well with most types of soil.
Looks polished but requires maintenance
Synthetic turf rolls can also be placed over various wood surfaces. If you have a wooden deck, patio, bench, or plant rack, then this application will also work for you. To prevent the wood from rotting, make sure you cover and seal the wood so it becomes aptly water-resistant. Additionally, you may opt to use a mild adhesive to keep the waterproof barrier in place.
Rough, rugged, and turf ready
Artificial grass can be installed on swimming pool surrounds and cement patios, and because of the nature of the material, you can easily cut your grass panels to any size or shape, and have it stay in place without using copious amounts of adhesive. If your desired grass area will be used for rough play of children or pets, you will best benefit from more durable types of grass, or simply invest in some quality shock pads for your turf.
Flexible and easy to shape
Small cuts of fake grass make great decorative pieces for homes. They can be glued to make centerpieces, glass coasters, outdoor tables, and more. A small amount of adhesive can go a long way, as synthetic turf can be attached firmly to plastic surfaces without fear of it slipping off or sliding while in use. With the proper tools, fake grass can actually be used just like any fabric utilized in various craft projects.
Uneven but solid foundation
Fake grass can also be installed under brick. If the surface seems uneven in any way, you may use a thin pad to protect the turf from wear and tear. Installation on paver or brick surfaces may be trickier, but the use of simple adhesive strips to secure the surface should suffice.
Artificial grass can be installed on a large number of surfaces. Quality artificial turf can withstand even the most stressful circumstances. So when choosing a supplier, go for the one with a solid reputation and with impressive reviews from actual product users. This is unlikely to be an issue with newer constructions but in older buildings or homes, it’s mandatory that you have someone look into it first before starting a project.
You don’t want your home or building to suffer like this.
What you must remember is that your roof will not only be holding synthetic grass, it will be bearing the weight of the workers, furniture, accessories, and any equipment that comes with the installation. Artificial grass is so much more lighter than natural ones, but it’s still important to check if the structure will be able to carry its weight. This is to ensure everyone’s safety and to guarantee that there will be no delays in your project.
We understand that you would want to use your rooftop for cookouts and get-togethers, (who wouldn’t?) but fake grass can be damaged by embers or hot surfaces. If you feel like it can’t be helped, you can always install the grass on a smaller section on the deck so there would still be a safe space for cooking and playing around in.
This is not how you want to end your cookouts
If you decide to push through with the installation, you can minimize damage to the wood by reinforcing the drainage and airflow. Check for existing drainage issues and address them right away. Waterproofing is mandatory and regular comprehensive check-ups should be done to see if everything is staying in place and holding up.
Nope. Nope. Big Nope.
Rooftop installations are great DIY projects but if you’re not confident about your skills just yet, you can always hire professionals to do the work for you. If you do decide to DIY, we recommend checking out the accessories available on our website. These products are designed to make your DIY journey easier and more convenient.

All grass types are vulnerable to lawn disease, with the amount of damage highly dependent on how you maintain your lawn. And as with any disease, before any cure or treatment is given, the root cause must first be identified to improve the chances of fighting it.
The main cause of lawn disease is microscopic living organisms. These include fungi, nematodes, phytoplasmas, bacteria, and more. However, for most lawn diseases, the culprit is usually pathogenic fungi.
Pathogenic fungi remain dormant in the soil until environmental conditions are favorable. A simple infection can easily turn into an outbreak that can be distributed by wind, foot traffic, rain, or more. Since these organisms have no stems or roots, they get their nutrients solely from their host, or the grass blades making up your lawn.
There are 3 major conditions that must be met before lawn disease develops. These conditions include:
Presence of pathogen in and around your soil.
Type of grass susceptible to that specific pathogen.
Favorable environmental conditions.
The third and last one has the most impact on the vulnerability of your lawn because it’s almost certain that there are pathogens in your soil, and your lawn will always be susceptible to a specific type of pathogen. However, having just the perfect conditions necessary before the pathogens begin to flourish doesn’t happen every day. Proper maintenance and meticulous inspection is your best bet in discouraging any unwanted growth.
For your reference, we highlight 5 of the most common lawn diseases below:
This is one of the most widely spread diseases that affect almost any cool-season turf lawn. This specific disease can wreak havoc on Tall Fescue, Kentucky Bluegrass, and Perennial Ryegrass especially when nighttime temperatures start dropping. Although easy to identify, it is known for being notoriously sneaky that by the moment you notice it on your turf, it would already be at significantly high levels. Fortunately, this disease responds well to various fungicide brands.
True to its name, the large patch begins as small baseball-sized patches that eventually develop into automobile-sized areas. With an active infection, the edges of the turf display an off-color shade with a healthy patch of green in the center. Fungicide control is best attained with applications from the previous Spring or Fall upon first sight of the disease.
Though not as prolific as other diseases, the summer patch and necrotic ring spot in Kentucky Bluegrass may be one of the more difficult lawn diseases to manage. Symptoms usually come up as tan or brownish circular patches on the turf during late summer.
Once the symptoms appear, options for control will be limited. Frequent irrigation may help the turf recover but at this point, chemical options are ineffective. The best management for this form of disease is prevention in the form of fungicides.
The name of this disease suggests that this mold would be easy to identify due to the pink color. However, pink snow mold is only pink for a short, limited time and does not even need snow to infect your turf. In cool areas with humid weather, pink snow mold can occur any time of the year.
Symptoms show small circular patches that may have a water-soaked appearance along the edges. Under wet conditions, white mycelium may appear in the patch with the margins looking reddish pink. Under dry conditions, the same patches may become tan and look bleached. There are options to control pink snow mold once the symptoms show, but preventive applications are still much more effective at keeping the disease away.
Pythium blight is a foliar (relating to leaves) disease that occurs swiftly in vulnerable stands of turf just like in seedlings. Technically classified as water mold, these outbreaks are commonly associated with poorly draining soil or damp and humid conditions where the turf leaves experience very little drying.
Newly seeded areas receiving daily watering can provide favorable environments for pythium development. Symptoms include circular areas up to 3 inches in diameter and grayish foliage with a water-soaked appearance. White mycelium may also be present. Use of preventive fungicide is possible but once symptoms appear, chemical interventions are not nearly as effective in treating the disease.
Do not over-fertilize the grass.
Do not starve the grass; simply adhere to a balanced fertility program.
For warm-season grass, fertilize only after breaking dormancy. Never fertilize in the Fall since the disease can return when the weather gets cooler.
Do not irrigate unless necessary. Water in the early hours of the morning while the grass is still covered in dew. Watering right after the dew has dried extends the amount of time the soil and grass is wet.
Sugar is secreted to the grass surface and mixes with morning dew. This same sugar becomes a food source for leaf spot and other pathogenic fungi. Drag a hose over the grass to remove the sugary dew mix.
During an active infection, avoid the use of herbicides. If there is an urgent need for damage control, turn to spot spraying instead. Avoid herbicides that are known to further encourage leaf spot and other lawn diseases.
Skip the fungicide if the disease doesn’t progress way past the leaf spot stage.
Once any disease reaches the crown, the grass affected will inevitably die. Instances like these where the use of fungicide is warranted, apply as needed the soonest possible.
The answer’s pretty straightforward--avoid natural grass. You might be thinking, “but what’s a lawn without my grass?!” and you know what, we perfectly understand that reaction. Know what else we understand and firmly believe? That you deserve only the best. So why don’t you go for a much better option; one that is more eco-friendly, not a time-waster, and stays aesthetically pleasing for way longer than natural grass.
Yes, we’re talking about synthetic grass.
Unknown to many, fake grass is actually a more nature-friendly choice compared to real grass. Designed to last for years, synthetic grass minimizes carbon footprint, water usage, and removes the need for fertilizers, fungicides, and herbicides.
Artificial grass will never ever catch a disease, eliminating any possibility that you have to use harsh chemicals for treatment or worse--seasonal preventive application.
If you’ve read up to here, chances are you’re really interested and possibly just really tired of having to go through all the stress involved in battling lawn disease. If you need more resources on synthetic grass and why you should make the switch today, we recommend you read more here.
Fake grass may look like a villain at first glance but what the uninformed ones consider a gray area, is actually the greenest choice you can possibly make. It’s never too late to make the switch, take the more mindful option and never be bothered by lawn disease ever again.

Is less more?
Most people usually associate minimalism with the simple concept of having material things.
But minimalism is more than just having a few items at hand, it’s all about reassessing your habits, motivations, and purpose. Living a fast-paced life in the city with little time for leisure, it’s understandable why people seek sanctuary in their homes, where they are most comfortable. However, a cluttered home can be worse.
Maybe going away for a few days isn’t an option, or maybe you’re short on funds for that R&R you so badly deserve... Either way, there are other means by which you can declutter and feel great about yourself, your home, and your life in general.
The following tips can help you maximize minimalism as you take your first steps towards clutter-free living and a more enlightened disposition in life.
Even just looking at this feels good, imagine living in this!
Organizing just means you’re moving things around. At the back of your mind, you know you still have some unfinished business. You can ignore that nagging feeling for a bit but in time, it’s going to pile up and might even be the tipping point of your sanity.
Step away from the sale! if you don’t need it? Thank you, next!
Remember, it’s not really a bargain if you make up in quantity what you claim to have saved in discounts. Take the bargain as it is and always balance between your needs and wants. What if it’s really cheap? Just because it’s a shirt for a $1, doesn’t mean you need it.
Which of these shirts don’t belong? Let it go. Let it go!
We all know that one shirt you have stored away deep inside the dresser. It’s old, it has holes everywhere, and it hasn’t been used in ages. Your high school band shirt, a concert shirt from 1987, something that belonged to the one that got away. Keep the concert shirt (‘cause it’s vintage now, duh) and lose the rest. Sentiment is a hoard monster. Let go, live in the now. After all, nothing of importance stays hidden for that long. No one puts their baby in a corner!
Set a date and stick to it.
The longer you wait, the higher your clutter will pile up into an uncontrollable heap. If you wait for the urge to tidy up, you could be waiting forever, pick a date to do the deed and stick to it. There’s no better time than the present to make some changes that will benefit your body and mind.
Function first, everything has a purpose.
Buy a shirt, take one out of your closet. This decluttering strategy puts functionality first. I mean, you wouldn’t buy an additional toaster, if one is underperforming right? You’d replace it. This way you’re making space instead of asking yourself if you have space for more.
Sometimes the conquest is greater than the reward.
Mmmm…that ‘brand-new’ smell - it’s undeniable that shopping makes people feel good otherwise, retail therapy would just be called something else -- like impulsive buying syndrome. But at the end of each day, the temporary highs brought about by small purchases will remain as they are, temporary. So always remember to take control of your emotions so you never ever have to suffer any sort of buyer’s remorse.
Just you and your thoughts. Imagine the productivity in a space like this!
This doesn’t just refer to tangible items. It refers to everything that causes clutter to your life. Old files on your computer, emails you’ve been meaning to delete, the works. If the task makes you want to close your eyes and turn away, you know it’s time you take a seat and start purging.
A few good tools to fix the things that you can’t put a price tag on.
Nanna’s watch, dad’s old toolkit, that heirloom sewing machine that’s been in your family for 5 generations. Some things you just can’t put a price to, so replacing is just not an option. You’ll never be able to ‘buy’ meaning, so roll up your sleeves and invest in maintaining or fixing them instead of buying new!
The best things in life live in your heart.
No material possession will ever bring you comfort the same way a fellow human does. So focus on people and the value they add to your life and not things that will fade over time and leave no memories whatsoever.
Everything in its place.
Equip your home with only the basics. You’ll be amazed at how much space you free up emotionally and mentally without all the distractions. Minimalism should extend to your outdoor spaces and how much you spend on them as well. Don’t get caught up in the cycle of maintaining an image or throwing money away. Invest in yourself and let only positivity in with MegaGrass low-to-no maintenance synthetic turf perfect for a minimal life.
Your state of mind is every bit as important as your physical state. These systems work hand in hand in providing you a life that you would love to live. Invest in the things that matter. Declutter, detoxify, de-stress. Remember that when your core is impaired, everything else goes down with it.

Artificial grass reviews can easily be found online, but for your convenience, we put together a list of 5 key questions you should ask yourself before buying artificial grass.
The use of artificial grass is often stereotyped as a landscaping option that is harmful to our planet. However, more and more studies are now proving that this is not the case. For instance, a review on environmental and health impacts of artificial turf has published a preliminary life cycle assessment suggesting that the environmental impacts of artificial turf fields were lower than equivalent grass fields.
That being said, artificial grass is now being widely considered for multiple applications both in residential and commercial spaces. Installation of synthetic grass comes with significant water savings and lower maintenance requirements. It is also increasingly promoted presently as a sustainable replacement for live grass on lawns and athletic fields due to this.
Artificial grass is also washable, toxin and emission-free. Also, artificial grass does not require the regular use of fuel-powered lawnmowers, unlike natural grass. There are several other reasons to buy artificial grass. In the end, it all boils down to your preference and your values.
It all depends on the size of your lawn. The more accurate your measurements, the less waste you end up with.

Currently, a growing number of city dwellers appreciate the value of synthetic grass centerpieces on rooftops, balconies, and upper-level patios. The beauty of a lush natural background helps dissipate the monotony of hot, paved streets and towering concrete buildings. Property owners have discovered they can create inviting recreational centers in these locations simply by adding a lawn and potted plants.
In California, the prevalence of sunny weather makes this option especially welcome. Whether you manage a multistory apartment building or a condo complex, you don't want to overlook the potential of rooftop retreats as places to enjoy the skyline and savor relaxing breezes. An artificial turf covering helps transform a rooftop into a valuable social amenity.
Artificial lawns have gained widespread popularity in this part of California as a ground covering during recent years in part due to their contribution to water conservation. Many homeowners enjoy the beauty of lush, perpetually green turf free from extensive maintenance and watering obligations. Yet only comparatively recently have condominium and apartment complexes discovered the utility of synthetic grass as centerpieces for creating serene upper story gardens.
Just consider a few of the benefits your community enjoys by adding this material to a roof or balcony. These advantages seem simple. Yet they may help create a remarkably useful setting for tenant social gatherings:
Enjoy a soft, lush lawn without the need to apply water or fertilize the grass;
Evoke the beauty of nature in a heavily developed, overwhelmingly paved setting;
Improve roof insulation cost-effectively;
Add an in-demand amenity to your building;
Provide a place for residents to relax amidst a green backdrop.
While the concept of a lawn and garden atop a roof seems trendy today, this idea does owe much to the past. From the proverbial hanging gardens of ancient Babylonia to the sod houses of homesteaders on the Great Plains, roofs and grass do share historic associations. Possibly the popularity of these designs today owes much to bygone generations.
Fortunately, modern roof oases benefit from the development of impressive technology and innovative architectural concepts. Builders in the San Diego Area frequently create structures that help residents enjoy the awesome beauty of this region. Does it really seem surprising so many talented property managers have discovered ways to combine panoramic vistas with low maintenance, upper-level gardens, and lawns?
Of course, adhering to some common sense guidelines makes implementing this project much easier. Although it offers numerous advantages, a roof-based garden does provide greater satisfaction when developers take some smart precautions:
Why should you seek the services of an experienced roofing contractor to perform the installation for you? Remember, buildings do not possess uniformly constructed roofs. Some structures offer better load bearing capabilities than others. In some cases, flat roofs include specific drainage channels which must remain open and unobstructed in order to prevent the pooling of water.
For a variety of reasons, before you transform any room into a social space, it makes sense to obtain input from a knowledgeable roofing contractor and, possibly, a structural engineer. You'll want to ensure the amenities you plan to add to this location don't exceed the optimal weight bearing requirements of your roof or balcony. Whether you design a new building with this in-demand feature, or you plan to enhance an existing structure with this addition, obtaining the input of qualified experts proves helpful.
A related consideration for anyone contemplating the installation of a synthetic grass centerpiece for an upper story garden relates to safety. Adding a suitable fence and/or railing to the location may enhance this spot as a social gathering place. A refreshing upper-level retreat should ideally incorporate both convenience and safety into its design.
By carefully considering safety issues from the outset, you'll improve the chance people in a residential community will utilize this type of amenity frequently. A well-maintained, secure upper-level garden holds the potential to enhance the appeal of real estate significantly. This amenity should showcase your realty in a desirable way.
Your roofing contractor and/or structural engineer can offer valuable assistance in selecting positive drain system ("PDS") tiles to use underneath your artificial lawn in a balcony or roof garden. While synthetic turf offers insulation and cost advantages, you'll still need to ensure adequate drainage. Fortunately, the use of PDS tile or similar tile products facilitates this process.
These specially designed tiles permit water to flow out of a location safely, without pooling beneath artificial turf or soaking into the building. Several manufacturers have designed excellent PDS-style tile systems to promote drainage beneath the synthetic turf. These products contribute to the long-term satisfaction residents obtain from the creation of upper-level green retreats and social areas.

According to Dr. James B. Beard, a turfgrass scientist with international recognition, people have been investing time and money into their artificial lawn landscaping for hundreds of years. Even before that, people in Africa thousands of years ago settled where turfgrasses were low in the savannas, which allowed them to hunt or see approaching danger with ease. By the medieval times, Europeans filled the areas around castles with grass so that watchmen could scan the horizon for people heading toward them. During the 15th century, ornamental lawns started to pop up at private residences and in parks. Today, a lawn is no longer considered a status symbol and is common at private residences around the world. However, some experts believe it's time for this to change. Is artificial grass the answer?
Maintaining a lawn that uses real grass costs money and time, not to mention depletes natural resources at a faster rate. The Environmental Protection Agency says the average four-person family uses about 352 gallons of water per day, and depending on the region, between 30 percent and 60 percent of that is outdoors. Real grass requires watering to maintain a healthy appearance, and many homeowners water their lawns for about 20 minutes per day. That is the equivalent of taking more than 800 showers in seven-day period. When you pair that with the fact that a Government Accountability Report from 2014 showed that 40 state water managers expected a shortage in the next decade, it's easy to see why a real lawn is bad for the environment in terms of water usage.
It isn't just water that experts worry about, either. The EPA also notes that Americans use roughly 800 million gallons of gasjust by mowing their lawns each year, which releases a variety of pollutants into the air. Regulation of emissions from garden equipment engines didn't occur until the late 1990s, which means that people using older machines are releasing an even higher amount of carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides and other pollutants into the area. Even new mowers create enough emissions in one hour of use equivalent to driving 11 new cars for the same amount of time. That doesn't even include the gas that homeowners spill as they try to fill their own mowers. more than 17 million gallons of gasoline and other fuels leech into the ground and make their way into water supplies each year. You must also consider ozone alert days since most lawn maintenance occurs during summer months. When the ground level ozone is at its highest, using gas-powered mowers can contribute to problems for people who have asthma or other respiratory issues aggravated by ozone levels.
The problems with real grass don't change the fact that people still want gorgeous lawns. They're comfortable for relaxing on the weekends and add curb appeal to homes, which is often important for those who plan to sell. The solution is to help homeowners find sustainable landscape ideas. One such idea is the use of artificial grass. Fake grass is comprised of synthetic fibers that look like the real thing. They are most common in areas where sports are played, but an increasing number of business owners and homeowners are turning to it as a solution for the environmental problems brought on by real lawns.
Although it's only started getting more attention in the past decade or two, artificial grass is not a new idea. In fact, it's been around since the 1960s when the Astrodome in Houston, Texas, used it for its second season. It had tried natural grass in 1965 but found it couldn't keep the grass alive and painted it green to maintain appearances for the second half of the season. In April 1966, the stadium installed a limited supply of AstroTurf on the infield. By July of the same year, the entire field was artificial grass, and by the 1970s, it was common in indoor and outdoor sports arenas alike.
Despite its benefits, artificial grass didn't grow in commercial and residential landscaping until the 1990s. Even then, it was more popular in arid regions where it was harder to keep a natural lawn alive. Today, it is becoming increasingly popular for all types of businesses and homes in neighborhoods across the country.
The benefits of artificial grass for the environment are easy to see. Since you will no longer need to use a gas-powered mower on your lawn, you'll stop contributing to the rise in air pollution, and your neighbors will likely appreciate the lack of noise pollution at 10:00 a.m. on a Saturday as well. Fake grass also does not require fertilizers or weed killers that may use toxic chemicals to keep it looking healthy, which means it is safer for kids and pets. Finally, you'll save roughly 55 gallons of water per square foot each year. The Lawn Institute estimates the average lawn at 10,000 square feet. That translates to 550,000 gallons of water saved.
The sustainable living benefits of fake grass aren't just for the environment, though. Artificial grass also makes your life easier. For one thing, it's affordable. Although the upfront cost can feel quite expensive, fake grass lasts up to 25 years. When you factor in the money you'll save on new mowers, fuel for them, fertilizers, watering and other maintenance costs for a natural lawn, an artificial one more than pays for itself. You'll also save plenty of time. Imagine how much more fulfilling your weekend will be when you can swim with the kids, read a good book or simply relax on the couch instead of mowing, weeding and performing other maintenance tasks all day.
Simply put, everywhere is the best place for artificial grass. Business owners who use it show they care about the environment and maintain a gorgeous property all year without needing to pay hefty landscaping bills. In sports and on playgrounds, fake grass is easier on the joints and safer when people fall. If the area is properly leveled first, it also prevents the natural holes or uneven terrain that can cause unexpected falls on a natural lawn. Most types of artificial grass include drainage technology, which means fewer muddy footprints and paw prints in the house. Sustainable lawns are so modern that they even look great when used to create unique rooftop patios or decks.
Between the savings, modern look and, of course, the environmental benefits, it's easy to see why more people are turning to artificial grass for their homes and businesses.
