Mower Drive Belt

  • Does anyone have a Toro lawn mower, and do you know how to remove the steering mechanism underneath it?
I was trying to climb a hill in the yard when the mower started smoking. I jerked it hard, and the drive belt completely failed. I towed it to the shed on an ATV, but I can't get the steering mechanism off.
Does anyone know how to do this, or will I have to take it to the dealer?

  • Here, the problem has gone beyond simply removing the steering gear. Smoke and a broken belt after attempting to climb a hill usually indicate transmission overload or a jammed or slipping belt, not just a localized mechanical failure.

  • On Toro lawn mowers, the steering mechanism underneath is usually not removed directly. It's held in place by the frame, linkages, and fasteners. Access to it is almost always blocked by the deck and drive components. In your case, the situation is complicated by the fact that there was a break, and installing a toro 75750 deck belt will restore normal operation by relieving tension in the system. After this, you can disassemble and service the steering mechanism.
