Is the shock pad necessary for installation?

The shock pad is very pricey and I would prefer to not spend that much. Is it necessary for installation?

Shock pad under artificial grass is an option, not a must. People use shock pad under either regular artificial grass or putting greens for extra cushions, however, in reality, most of installations of artificial grass done without shock pads.
