How well does artificial grass hold up in snow? Is it unpractical to install it in a snowy area?

Artificial grass can be installed in snowy area without any issues! Most of the real grass lawns will turn brown in such areas during the winter time, and artificial grass will give you the green lawn all season long! Like the real grass lawn or any outdoor surfaces, it might get a bit slippery when covered with snow or frost, so just be careful walking or playing on the artificial grass surface in such conditions. But your grass will be just fine withholding with the cold temperatures and with snows/frost on them. Your artificial grass might get a bit more stiff in cold weather which is very normal. Such stiffness caused by cold might make it more difficult to install, therefore, we always recommend installations to be done in decent warm day unless you or your installers are very experienced with installing artificial turf during cold weather.
