Big data analytics tools are meant to process information that can be hard to deal with when using traditional spreadsheets or databases—the information becomes “big data” when it is too large. Apache Spark is a popular choice for distributed data processing whereas in certain environments, Hadoop still has relevance. In addition, services on cloud platforms like AWS, Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure are available for storing and analysing large datasets. It is all dependent on the data, the speed that it needs to be processed at, the infrastructure and technical skill. One needs to understand the volume of work, and the type of analysis required (batch, real-time or both) before selecting a platform.
