I've also found that learning the timing of steering, throttle, and braking makes a noticeable difference. A fast entry might look impressive, but carrying a controlled slide through the entire corner feels much more rewarding.
Another part I like is the customization. Instead of treating upgrades as something to unlock and forget, I find it more interesting to see how changes to the car affect the way it behaves on different sections of a track.
