  • I was on a boat recently and when the backup anchor came up it was a fortress 23 (37' sailboat), and the rode was rope (some braided 3/4") no chain at all. In the end we untangled our main anchor without needing the spare. My question is how effective would a Fortress be without some chain?

  • Jumping in on this older post because I’ve used a Fortress without chain a few times, and it can work, but it’s way more touchy. I found it sets better with at least a short length of chain to keep the shank low. Curious if you tried it since posting and how it behaved on your 37-footer.

  • I’ve had a Fortress dig in fine on rope alone, but it was twitchy in gusts. A short length of chain makes a world of difference by keeping the shank low. I ended up swapping to a better rode from marine rope suppliers https://www.americanrope.com/ which gave me steadier stretch and less chafe, so the anchor behaved more predictably even before I added chain.
