  • Hi everyone,

I’m posting on behalf of a friend who recently moved to Canada and wants to get a driver’s license. They’re unsure how their foreign license will be recognized and what steps they need to follow.

Do they have to take the knowledge test and road test immediately or is there a way to transfer their existing license?

Any tips on studying for the tests, especially for newcomers who aren’t fluent in English or French, would be great.

Also, recommendations for driving schools that assist immigrants would be really helpful. How long did it take for you?

  • I realize this is from a while ago, but I'd like to chime in. Most provinces let you swap a licence from a listed country for a Canadian one, often just a vision test; otherwise you’ll need the written and road tests. Study guides are on the ministry sites and many schools offer multilingual classes for newcomers. The whole swap usually takes 2‑4 weeks once you have the paperwork.

  • I got my International Driving Permit from https://idaoffice.org/ and it made the switch easier. In most provinces you can drive on your home licence for a few months, then exchange it; some places waive the written test, others only need the road test. Grab the province’s handbook, use free online quizzes, and look for a “new‑immigrant” class at a local driving school—usually the whole thing takes 4‑6 weeks.
