First step for planning an ADU build?

I’m starting to look into building a small unit for my parents in our backyard. I’ve heard horror stories about people getting halfway through and finding out their lot doesn't meet the legal requirements. What should be my very first move to make sure my property is actually eligible for this?

You’ve got the right mindset! I almost made a huge mistake by hiring a contractor first. Instead, I’d highly recommend doing an adu feasibility check. I used the Aduscale tool, and it was a total lifesaver. It maps out your zoning, size, and layout constraints instantly. It’s much better to know your limits before you start spending real money!
