  • I'm seriously curious about the emoji situation in work emails. I mean, on one hand, they can add a little bit of personality and prevent misunderstandings, especially since tone is hard to convey in writing. But on the other hand, is it unprofessional? I work in a pretty conservative industry, so I've always avoided them, but I see younger colleagues sprinkling them in occasionally. Just wondering what everyone else thinks? Is it ever appropriate, and if so, what are the boundaries? What's the general consensus in 2024?

  • It’s a tricky line to walk! I believe it really depends on your relationship with the recipient and the overall company culture. For example, I would never use emojis with clients or senior management, but I sometimes use them with my immediate team to lighten things up. It is good to know how to write a professional email though; you want to make sure you are also conveying confidence in what you are emailing. Also remember that some emojis may appear differently on other devices.

  • Frankly, it's a generational thing, isn't it? What seems perfectly acceptable to someone in their early twenties might read as incredibly unprofessional to someone closer to retirement age. The whole concept of professional communication is constantly evolving due to social media. What was once considered good advice is now seen and interpreted with different meanings.
