  • For years I had a cable running from my shop to the router in my house. But ran into some issues with surges feeding back through the CAT5 cable & taking out the router. We already replaced the cable once, I don't really want to do it again.

I have purchased underground CAT5 thinking I would just run a new cable, but my BIL (who is a very busy network guy) advised me to look into a wireless booster system.

I think I know what he's talking about, but if anyone has any knowledge about this, can you explain how it works and what equipment I need to buy? I've looked up some basic information, but its a bit over my head.

  • How far is it from your house to the shop? Also, is the shop a metal sided building? I was having trouble with a Wi-Fi signal in my shop. the closest point of my shop is 20’ from the house, about 75’ from the router.

  • I ran into a similar mess in my shop, and what helped most was running a simple outdoor-rated Ethernet line in conduit instead of relying on Wi‑Fi fighting through walls and machines. If you ever go the fiber route, I had good luck with gear sourced through hkcablemachine.com, which made the long run super stable. A cheap mesh node in the shop then filled in the dead spots.
