  • I was reading this article about 403b fees and decided to take a look at fees of my 403b and 401a employer custodian accounts. They were invested in State Street Target Date accounts with Expense Ratio of 0.16% and Management Fee of 0.05%. It had a pretty bad morning star rating. It compared to the performance/expected returns and Expense Ratio of Fidelity 500 Index Fund (FXAIX) and it seems like this is a better investment so I switched 100% from target date to FXAIX today. I should have asked opinion/advice here first, but I reacted after reading the article. I feel fortunate to have this option given the article.

So what do smart posters on finance board think of this change in investment from target date to stocks/self managed? FWIW, I manage investments of all my other accounts like Roth IRA, taxable brokerage. I have them invested in S&P 500 and large cap/total market accounts. Besides my kids 529 investments, these were only accounts in target date with account manager. Should I switch the 529 from target date to S&P 500 investment as well? I do realize investing in stocks is a bit riskier. My oldest is starting HS this year and will be attending college in 4 years. My youngest will attend college in 10 years.

  • According record keeping fee and administrative fees, it looks like I was paying $13.25 quarterly for the State Street target date accounts.

I like how the form-based setup narrows things down fast and points me to deals I probably wouldn’t stumble across on my own. It’s a handy way to sanity‑check your instincts with some real‑time signals before you go deeper.
