  • I heard that I need a sub-base to install artificial grass. Which one should I use? I'm planning to install a small portion of artificial grass for my dog.

  • You will always need to build a sub base for your artificial grass installations. The main purpose of building the sub base for artificial turf is to provide proper drainage and good smooth yet solid surface. The followings are the general guidelines on building a sub base for your artificial grass:

    • Excavate about 4" of soil
    • Lay 2-1/2" drain rock and compact
    • Lay 1-1/2" decomposed granite and compacted to about 90%
    • You can also add a layer of weed barrier over the decomposed granite if you worry about weed growing.
    • You can also add a layer of gopher wire under the drain rock if you have gopher issues in your area.

For your particular application, the sub base is very important so that the dog urine will drain through properly.
