Now days you can use artificial grass on many of surfaces even though the main purpose of artificial turf is still to replace the real grass. By that said, the main applications are as followings:

• Residential and commercial landscape artificial grass lawns
• Artificial grass sport fields for both indoor and outdoor facilities
• Artificial grass for Pets
• Artificial grass for Playgrounds
• Artificial grass for golf putting greens

It's more popular for residential use nowadays though.
